can u smoke and still get into an ivy school?

i think the title pretty much explains what i mean. i ve known students in my school who went to ivy schools and if there is a common denominator about them is that none of them smoked and were very ...say "appropriate". hav u had anyone in ur school who smoked (throughout their high school career) but still managed to get into an ivy school?

One of my classmates, who is widely regarded as a hard-working genius, who has one of the highest GPAs in our graduating class, and who will be attending Yale next year, smokes pot and drinks.

Just about everyone drinks, and a number of people smoke. Even fewer do drugs.
But, I don't see how substance abuse is relevant to one's intellectual ability, personality, worth as a human being, etc.

Only if smoking is one of your passions and you have several national awards in it.

^ Yes, I was going to post a thread about it. Also, does being a internationally ranked beer pong player count as an award, because it is my biggest EC. I am sensing a hook!

What difference does it make OP? Seriously, its just college, jesus.

Um...duh? A lot of people I know smoke, drink, etc...and have no problems getting into HYPS and the like. What is your point?

One of my cousins is a regular smoker, he's going to stanford.

Smoking/Drinking is part of high school life, and it doesn't mean anything about academics..

An older friend of mine didn't want to apply to Georgetown. Both of his parents had met there so they forced him to apply. For ECs he put "massive drug use, binge drinker, sex".

He was rejected, but apparently (I dunno if this is true), he got an email from one of the admissions officers saying thank you for the laugh.

Yeah? I don't know why they couldn't.

If smokers didn't get into ivy league schools then I wouldn't be able to make fun of them =/

But yeah it may seem unfair to some but this is where you remember that what school you go to doesn't say anything about your character.

On a slightly different note, "beer pong" sounds like a bunch of alcoholics swaggerjackin a classic atari videogame. Anyone who disagrees with that statement is a swaggerjacker him/her/itself.

You can certainly smoke/do drugs and get into an elite school. There are not mutually exclusive.

However, no one will argue that smoking/drugs/sex correlates to a lower level of intellectualism.

^ I wouldn't necessarily be so sure. I know plenty of people who are actually more intellectual when they are smoking pot. It helps them think better.

I don't agree...and I can probably find millions of others worldwide.

HEALTH, perhaps. But NOT necessarily intellectualism. A correlation can always be FLIMSY, as it can involve MANY other factors like health issues, family problems, brain damage, environment, etc.

lololololololololololololololololollololololololol I understand the ignorance with smoking and drugs, but SEX??@!! ROFLMAO

Are you a Puritan?

Do I really have to post links to studies to prove my point... >__<

yes, post a link that says having sex(main one), smoking, drinking, or drug use correlates to a lower level of intellectualism.

Study: IQ linked to virginity - The Daily Collegian Online

According to the research, an adolescent with an IQ score of 100 was 1.5 to 5 times more likely to have had intercourse than an adolescent with an above average score of about 120 to 130.

Done.

I have other links, but I need to sleep.

EDIT: Okay, after re-reading this article, it doesn't deal with "intellectualism," [in fairness, how can you define it?], but it's close enough.

I know over twenty stoners that got into ivy league schools.

Oh, and I totally agree with mant00n1. Weed, as well as other drugs, definitely causes you to contemplate life in new ways and to a much greater extent; however, the key is moderation. If you take it too far, kiss your intelligence and all your social skills goodbye.

^ True, considering Francis Crick was on LSD when he discovered DNA!

^ definitely told my biology teacher that. She thought I was completely lying, though.

Smoking as in cigarettes or smoking as in weed? Big difference you know.
