Hey guys,

I was wondering if Chicago will let you take a gap year and come back next fall. I'm thinking about participating in this vocational exchange program in Germany, but I can't see to find any info on if Chicago allows it.

THanks!

Yes, it’s perfectly fine to take a gap year; I know several who have, and all of them have significantly benefited from that year off from formal education. Best of luck to you in your decision making and congratulations on being accepted into UChicago. Jeez, I’m glad I didn’t have to apply this year.

Yes you may! Write at email to the new dean of admissions telling him what your plans are. If he approves (which he probs will), then ask for a letter of confirmation if he does not offer to send you one already.

I’m spending a gap year in Germany right now.

One thing to keep in mind (as I have, rather, unfortunately discovered): your FA could be VERY VERY different the second time you apply for it. As in my case. Unfortunately I’ll be calling back other universities who accepted me last year, hoping I can get my acceptance from them back.

thanks signitblank! woww i just saw your stats, are you on the CBYX program too???

I’m having my interview next week…kinda scared but I’m sooo passionate about the program!! I really hope i make it xD

Any tips about the interview? How do you like it in Germany so far? Did you go on the young professionals exchange or the vocational exchange?

and yea…im sooo happy that UChicago lets you do this…my other acceptances (UCSD, UCLA, Berkeley) don’t allow this at all.

So how does the process work? Can i just come back and enroll automatically or do I have to do the application all over again?

syd200365:

As a student who deferred from 2009 and will be entering UChicago in September this year the process is very easy.

You don´t have to do the application is anything over again. At the end of February or early March UChicago will send you a letter and you simply have to confirm that you still want to enroll and redo your housing application.

I’m planning on deferring next year as well (hopefully at UChicago) through CBYX. How likely is it that financial aid will change? That’s my parents’ biggest worry with the program.

signitblank, how’re you liking the CBYX program so far? It seems great from everything I’ve heard, but I haven’t spoken to too many people currently on the program.

Yeah, CBYX is awesome. My FA went way up (due to an error on my part on last years FA app), so in that aspect not very good.

CBYX is very advisable, especially now that you’re both graduated. You don’t have to worry about grades or applying to schools while abroad.

If you are accepted to CBYX, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE learn a little German before you go. You’ll have a nice long summer to do it in. It will pay you back a million times over.

Good luck both of you

Good to know that the program is so great. The only person I know who did it went home early and really didn’t enjoy his experience. I’m so glad that I’m graduating now and will have everything with college set because I know kids going next year who will have to apply from abroad.

syd200365: Holy cow, I randomly came across this thread on accident. I’m in a similar position as you. I was accepted to UCSD, UC Berkeley, and the Congress-Bundestag scholarship. I know the UC’s normally do not allow gap years, but will contacting the admission office help my chances of doing doing a gap year before attending Berkeley?
