Can you balance a social life and schoolwork frehsmen yr?

I recently had a friend, who is currently a sophomore at drexel, tell me that she didn't have much sleep and not much of a social life her freshmen year..... I just wanted to see how others who went through their freshmen year felt about it... thanks.

Of course it’s possible…just not everyone knows how to do it. Some people don’t seem to realize that college requires actual work and try to party all the time and then do miserably, while others don’t realize that you need to give yourself a break every once in awhile. Depending on your major, you may have a lot of work to do at certain times. However, unless you really procrastinate, you should have time for a good social life as well. Sleep…well that’s another thing haha. Pick later classes if you tend to need to stay up late doing work.

Can you actually choose your classes Freshman year?

I have my schedule – it was set by my advisor

First term your advisor schedules classes for you. After that, you pick them yourself pretty much going off of a recommended plan of study. Most likely you won’t be able to take many electives freshman year depending on your major, but you can at least choose your class times and whatnot for the winter and spring terms.

hey sarah. Are the advisors really strict about the schedules because I have class from 10 til 1 on thursdays and want to see if they could possibly change that… btw do you think it would be okay to not buy course books til first day to see if any teachers might not require them?

on a side note, my friend said she commuted so i guess it would be pretty hard having any social life.

If you give them a legit reason as to why you don’t want a specific class when it is then they can possibly change it for you. I looked up my teachers last summer and saw that my English teacher was horrible so I requested to be switched from a regular class to a hybrid one and gave my adviser two possible English classes that fit into my schedule that had good teachers and weren’t full. My adviser changed it for me and it worked out really well! However, I don’t think the fact that you don’t like your class times warrants a change in your adviser’s eyes. Plus, a 3 hour block of class isn’t bad at all. You’ll appreciate getting it over with without a random hour break because it wastes time. You can just grab lunch with friends at 1. :)

And if you want to wait to buy books you can because most professors won’t require them on the first day and some might not require them at all (or you can see if you can borrow classmates’ books if needed).
