Since my question probably doesn't make sense, let me explain. . .

I did get a financial aid award, but it wasn't really enough for me to afford this college. I have a financial aid reconsideration form to fill out, but I definitely will not be able to get everything filled out and reviewed before the May 1 deposit deadline. So, if I accept a place in this college I really want to go to over the cheaper college, would I still be able to ask for more financial aid (because of changed financial circumstances)? And would it be possible to get more merit aid or grant money?

You ave to complete the form and email it to them ASAP. Otherwise, if you accept a spot at that school and realize in the summer you can not afford it then you will join the ranks of many students who have to drop out due to the same financial reasons. That’s the reason that wait lists remain open in the summer!

Why can’t you get this done in a timely fashion if it is important? I’ve had nearly everything ready since February, but my parents filed their taxes late so I wouldn’t be able to get tax return transcripts to the school in time. :(

What is your basis for reconsideration? Is there something that was not previously reflected on your finaid application forms? My parents started living separately and my dad lost his job. (I filed the FAFSA in early January.) I’m sort of hoping that they’ll give more merit money, but I doubt it. . .

*How much more do you need? If it is thousands of dollars, you might want to think about the affordability of this school. * Yeah, I do need like $10,000 more for its price to be even close to the other school (which didn’t even offer much scholarship money but was much lower cost to begin with). I really love this school and would much rather attend it, but price really is a huge factor.

You make a lot of sense. . . I just don’t want there to be no room for me if I miss that May 1 deadline.

Just for your parents being separated you are not going to get anything because the FA officers are suspicious of anything less than 10 yrs old. They might do something for your dad losing his job but 10k gap is difficult to close. Why do not you also ask at the lower priced school to also reconsider their fa package? If you send all the paperwork, the FA officers will have the decision within 1-3 days. Just call them on Monday and ask what can you do to demonstrate your need so you can have their financial aid decision before May 1st. Tell them they are your top choice and really love to go there. What about loans, etc? What is the school? Others in the board have more experience and will tell you whether that is a school that you have a chance to get more or not.

Because FA is based on the previous year’s income, your federal EFC may not change dramatically because your parents were married on the day that you filed the FAFSA.

The school will look at the day that he lost his job
If he is receiving any severance from his job and the amount of the severance

From your posts, you were accepted at the Pharm D program at Rutgers and St. Johns. The challenges that you may have are:

Neither school is “generous” as far as giving financial aid
Neither program meet 100% demonstrated need

If you are in-state for Rutgers, take the package and go.

Keep in mind that should your parents divorce, you live in a state where child support ends at 18 and it could be a possibility that your dad, who is now unemployed may not have to contribute to your attending college in the divorce decree.

Even if you were to get additional aid from St Johns, it will not be enough to be aligned with Rutgers. There is becoming an over supply of pharmacists, so there is no guarantee that you may be in a position to service massive debt if you are thinking about loans as a way of making this happen.

Thank you so much for your realism. I shouldn’t have been placing too much hope in something with no solid guarantee for scholarships. (And I know about the oversaturation of pharmacists, but hearing it from someone else was actually really helpful in setting me straight. XD) I’ve decided to enroll in Rutgers, and I think I can grow to love it almost as much as I loved St. John’s.

Anyway, thank you everyone for your help! =D
