I had originally planned on applying to UVA and Harvard early.

However, I'm having qualms about my Common App essay and I don't want it sent to Harvard yet. My Harvard supplement essay is pretty awesome, but I don't know if I can finish editing the CA Essay in the next two weeks and I would much rather have a couple more months to work on it.

Then again, I would love to have a decision over 4 months earlier. Hmmm. Tough choices.

Anyway, my question is: If I send my Common App to UVA this month, will I be able to go back and edit the CA essay? I have heard that you can create versions of the Common App essay. Should I do this before or after submitting? Thanks for the help

Please don’t answer if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

You can definitely create versions and thus modify your essay, update your ECs, etc. I think you have to submit to at least one school before creating a second version, but I’m not completely sure about that. I’d recommend submitting first, as then you won’t have to remember to make changes to both versions if you update your application between creating a second version and submitting.

I don’t recall where the instructions are. They’re somewhere on the Common App website, though. Might need to poke around a bit.

Wow. Thanks for the link with the answer to the question.
This helps tremendously. My child wanted to tailor their essay to one school and the common ap says you shouldn’t do that. This information explains how to do it and that it’s OK to do it.

Yes, but in case it isn’t obvious, you can’t send the new app to a school that you already submitted the original app to. Once you have submitted the app to a college, that’s it, you can’t send another.
