Can you defer admissions once accepted

For anyone who may know or have done this--can you defer admissions to your program if you have been accepted with a very legitimate reason? Thanks

Sure, if the school allows it.

I know a Fulbright winner who deferred attending grad school to do research overseas.

I think most schools do it on a case by case basis. I know there was someone admitted the year after me that got a deferral for a year due to some family issues or something of the sort.

I’d say when asking and following through with the procedure to be as cordial as possible and be sure the secretaries and professors dealing with you don’t get mad at anything. I’ve known a few secretaries in my day to “accidentally” lose things when dealing with people that treat them poorly.

Some programs simply do not allow deferments. This will have to be discussed with the Director of Graduate Studies in the programs in question.

Basically, what Professor X said. Each program will have its own policies and procedures relating to deferments. Some programs won’t allow deferments at all under any circumstances, others will allow deferments upon request, still others will allow deferments but only if very legitimate reasons exist. And the exact procedures you’ll have to follow will vary too. So I’d say to check with the program administrator and/or the DGS to find out. Best of luck!
