I want to apply early decision because NYU is the only place I want to go, but I also want to take a year off and figure out who I am. Sounds stupid, but I need it. If I get accepted early decision, can I defer for a year? When applying, should I say that I want to defer for a year??

I wouldn't say you want to defer when applying. I doubt you'll be able to once accepted, but it's possible. You are bound to that school, you cannot defer and go somewhere else, but deferring to return the following year may be a possibility. Once you are accepted give them a call and see.

I would suggest just taking a year off then re-apply early decision. There is a program in Princeton New Jersey, a gap year program, that is very structured/reputable. You can take classes at Oxford etc.

I would suggest traveling as much as possible, take some academic classes at NYU over the summer (assuming you're currently a Junior in High School) then sign up for a very structured program. If you **** around the college will know and your chances for acceptance will be very slim.

I know a student who was accepted to Tisch and who deferred admission when she took an apprentice position with a professional ballet company. She had no problem with NYU honoring her request. The following year, she withdrew totally when she was elevated to a corps position.

If you are a "match" currently, I would actually recommend you apply without mentioning your plans to ask for a deferment for a year. You may change your mind in the next year anyway. Then, if you have a well thought out plan for the year and you are accepted, you can request to defer and see what happens.

So basically if I got accepted (Gallatin) and wanted to spend a year travelling Italy working on organic farms (WWOOF - World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) my chances of being able to defer are slim to none....

NYU honors one year deferments

From what I understand GallatinGirl, is that you should have no problem deferring especially if you are pursuing a worthwhile program such as volunteering on a farm. I have been accepted to Gallatin for this coming Fall and I am in the process of deferring for a year to spend some time pursuing religious studies before going to college. While at the Gallatin Spring Visit one of the current students said that she deferred to spend a year taking Russian Language classes and to live in Russia for a year. The only thing was, since she was taking the classes at an accredited university, she had to audit the classes as not to be considered a transfer student.

Don't do what icelemmings is suggesting - if you take a year off before applying to college, colleges look very suspiciously upon that. Virtually all colleges will let accepted students defer matriculation for a year - so if you get accepted for the 2008-2009 school year, just ask to matriculate in the 2009-2010 school year, and that should be fine.

Just to be sure, though, call NYU. I think you'll feel much less anxious hearing this from an NYU admissions officer than from us (and you don't have to tell them your name if you're worried that it might reflect poorly on your app)
