Can you get a good score on the Math 2 subject test without taking PreCalculus?

Would it be smart to take the Math 2 subject test and trying to learn the topics by studying or to take Math 1 with all the background knowledge needed and studying?

I would either take the test in June with no precalculus or in november with approximately 2 months of precalculus

Since you'll have to study a lot anyway, take it when you have less to do.

Algebra 2 is basically the same thing as Pre Calculus, except Pre Calculus covers on extra topic on derivatives, which I highly doubt won't be the bulk of the test.

precal doesnt go into derivatives....

Precalculus goes into derivatives, but generally not integrals.

Pre-cal just barely scrapes the surface of derivatives. Also, without pre-cal, he'll miss vital concepts about trig, vectors, polars, and functions that are likely to show up on Math II and that aren't covered in algerba II.

My advice? Forget about Math II; take Math I.

it depends on you as a person. skim through the topics covered in math iic, if you know most of it, take it. if not, you should really take precalc before taking it. a lot of my friends took the test without precalc and aced (800) it.

precal does not go into derivatives

yes it does...I learned the general rules about derivatives in my precalc class about polynomials

derivatives = calculus.. just because you learned about derivatives in your 'pre-calc' class doesn't mean derivatives or differentiation is part of pre-calculus. the only thing pre-calc might cover regarding derivatives would be finding derivatives using lim h->0 f(a+h) - f(a)/h. anyways, i wouldn't take math II if you haven't taken a pre-calculus or math analysis course. take math I and ace it.

what's the hurry? Unless you're a brilliant math student, not having taken pre-calc shouldn't affect your score. But, assuming you will be taking pre-calc junior year, you can study for a good 2 weeks and take math 2 in june, in time for the college application. Even if you screw up, you can always retake it in October which will still be in time for early decision.

that's exactly what I said akitta..we learned the general rule for finding them.

i got a 770 on it 2 months into my Precalc course. it does have a LOT of calc on it.

oh sorry haha

Yea, there's a lot of stuff in there that I remember learning in my Pre-Calc class, but I'm definitely not saying that it'd be impossible to take without that class. I'm sure if you put the time into it, you'd be okay.

Oh, and also, I don't think the two months into Pre-Calc would help that much, because in my class, the first few months were still review from Algebra II. So I think taking it in November would only have the advantage of giving you the summer to study. Other than that, if you're a bright math student, I think you'd be fine taking it in June, after taking a few practice tests, of course, and becoming familiar with the content.

what r you guys talking about.
i swear my pre cal book doesn't have any derivatives on it.
i looked at 4 pre cal books at the bookstore.

na da

to the OP:
yes, 2 months of precal will help alot.
so take it in nov.

"I got a 770 on it 2 months into my Precalc course. it does have a LOT of calc on it."

There are no problems on the math level II test which inherently require knowledge of calculus, although it may help for some.

is a 780 on math 2 a good score without taking precalc at all? just wondering, or should i retake?

To the guy who said "Take Math I":

That is highly not recommended. The math I has barely any curve and is very difficult to get a 750+ in... For now, don't take any SAT IIs... try like in november or sometime there.

780 is fine, don't bother retaking.
