I am currently in eight grade but I have all honors freshman classes right now. I had one honors high school class last year and I got a B in it (Computers) and this year I know that there is no way I can get an A average in Algebra 1. I really want to go to a really good college and go to med school. If I get all A's for the rest of high school could I still get into an Ivy League school? I got into one of the best high schools in the USA (30 something place in public schools.) Thanks for your help!

Slow down-- you’re still in 8th grade. Only high school classes/grades count towards your GPA, generally. Don’t stress out too much. Enjoy life while you can :).

I know. But I am in an advanced program. I have all HIGH SCHOOL freshman classes this year for which I get high school credits…

You don’t need to go to HYPSM or any other top 25 college to go to med school. Just sayin’.

Lol. Yes.
You’re fine

Your fine trust me.

I wish I started this process earlier.

Don’t worry. Freshman year grades matter very little. Plus, driven students who get B’s early on usually get a wake up call to do better in the following years of high school, IMO. That’s what happened to me! BTW, you really don’t have to worry about this stuff just yet. Enjoy you’re last year before high school…everything changes! :)

Thanks. So the B’s won’t really effect me if I get really good grades in all my classes?

lol as long as you end up with a 3.75 and up your in good shape and also your SAT scores is what they look at the most. and i would suggest you start reviewing basics and some sat vocab cause there is alot lol your in great shape.

^ I think that you should review some SAT language basics…

What is this world coming too when a (I’m guessing here) 13 year old is busy worrying about getting into college.

At the EARLIEST, start THINKING about it at the start of Junior year.

If you spend your whole HS life thinking about college and then the whole of college thinking about med school, and then the whole of med school thinking about getting a job and then . . . . . .

Where does life happen? Stop looking forward, and enjoy where you are now.

Threads like this make me worry about the state of humanity.

No, you are doomed. Good day.

^^ What he said.

Excellent advice. Take it to heart, OP. And realize that "any other really good college"≠just Ivy League. By the time you’re a junior or senior you may realize you really want to go to a small liberal arts college.

Thanks. Actually I just have times when I really worry about college. But I do live life the way I want to. I do live life for the moment while sometimes I just worry about the future and the past. Just depends when. And thanks I will take that advice to heart! Life is to short to spend it all worrying but also regret is such a pointless feeling so I’m working hard now so that I don’t have to regret things later. And I’m just following my dream (of being a surgeon.) Sorry for ranting.

Look through the results of previous years. Not all posters have a 4.0. Nor do all surgeons go to Harvard undergrad…

If this guy can’t get an A in algebra 1, it might be pretty hard getting an A in AP calculus BC his junior/senior year too. Also, stats, physics, and chemistry. Just saying.

^ Not true. I got a B in Algebra I in 8th grade…I really didn’t care about middle school. But, in high school, I’ve never gotten anything less than an A in pre-calc, Algebra II, chemistry, calculus, etc. He’ll probably become even more motivated to get good grades once high school starts.

^^ Not true. I got a B in Algebra 1 during my 7th grade year, and although I attribute some of it to not caring and another portion of it to my horrendous teacher I managed to get an A in pre-calc, geometry, Algebra 2, AP Chem, AP Physics, and got a 5 on the Calculus BC exam without taking an AP Calculus BC course. It’s all in the motivation.
