(2012.6) Is it better for people to be realistic or optimistic?

Determination is to a goal what tracks are to a train. Whereas some people believe that in order to achieve success you must be realistic, it seems to me that perseverance can sometimes make a great difference. My outlook for this situation could be illustrated by the success of Colonel Sanders. Moreover, the achievements of J.K. Rowling could provide evidence to my point.

Had Colonel Sanders not been persistent to achieve his dream, he would have never been the prestigious founder of the prosperous fast food chain, KFC. After 2 years and 1009 unsuccessful attempts, a course of time where Colonel Sanders was extremely motivated in moving forward, his chicken recipe was finally acknowledged. Never did he once yield to any misfortune, it was his optimistic viewpoint that led him to find a competing fast food chain in 1950.

Determination is a virtue that is more apparent than every in the biography of J.K. Rowling, the most influential woman in Britain. Embracing an ambition to chase her dreams, Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter novel in a 7 year period, despite dealing with unemployment, a divorce, the death of her mother, and clinical depression. J.K. Rowling once said, Failure meant the stripping away of the inessentials. It was her confidence and endurance that led to Rowlings rag to riches life story.

Generally speaking, being realistic has its advantages, but optimism is a prominent belief in order to achieve a goal. Had Colonel Sanders and J.K. Rowling been realistic, would they have found success in their respected fields?
