Can you send an extra essay? The Dartmouth Supplement was short.

I was surprised by how short the Dartmouth supplement to the common app was. All they asked for was 5 words to describe myself! Does anyone know if you can send an extra essay? I know they do except extra recommendations.

I sent an extra essay because I had a compelling reason to do so - I started a business that had reached 30,000 clients and there was no place for me to put it on the application (didn't write my common app essay about it). If you think it will help your application or provide information/insight admissions would otherwise not have, then go for it.

If you do send in an extra essay, make sure it's worth their while. Recommendations are quick and easy to read while essays are not. A short essay about a really meaningful activity is good but one about your life's goal is not. Keep it substantive.

Thanks, that helps. Mine is about an experience I had performing at a poetry reading at our school. I couldn't really mention this anywhere else, but I think I just won't include it because it isn't that important.

Nai: props on starting a business! that is amazing!

my supp essay for dartmouth was about why i eventually chose to homeschool

Yeah, you can send them pretty much anything; that is, they'll look at whatever you send them - but I agree that you should just make sure it's worth their while and that it's actually adding to your app. If it is, then definitely go for it!

Nai, what kind of business do you run?
