I am a prospective business student
I know this is a pretty competitive field... Does entering a college in a popular major affect your admissions? Can they admit you to the school if they do not admit you into that specific program?

For both of your questions, it depends on the school. There is no general answer that applies to every school.

I think “popular” and “stellar” are two different terms. I guess it is popular because it is stellar.

If so, the answer is yes. Penn is easier if you’re NOT a Wharton applicant. NYU is easier if you’re NOT a Stern applicant (and arts etc). Cornell is easier if you’re NOT a Hotel Management applicant (among others). So most of the times yes.

For many universities it doesn’t matter. And indeed many many student choose “undecided”, and of those who pick a major many change their minds by the end of sophomore year. For universities with multiple colleges (such as arts and sciences, engineering, business) you apply to a specific college. So knowing where your eventual major in hosted and applying to that college can be important. Transfers between colleges is not always easy.
