Canada- U of Toronto?

<p>Anyone here applying or go to U of T?</p>

<p>I am a student at Utoronto :D
Can i answer any of your Qs? :D</p>

<p>OOoo great =). I am wondering how you like the school and anything a prospective student might want to know about it.
Are you staying on campus or off campus? If you're staying on campus, what are the residences like and did they give you a questionnaire before assigning residences or did they randomly place you with someone?
What program are you taking?</p>

<p>btw, I have a question too</p>

<p>do you know if anyone transfered to the schools in the States in your schoool? if so? which schoool did the they go to? And is UT strong in computer science& business& pre-med?</p>

<p>I am a senior in vancouver ........lol.
thanks</p>

<p>by the way, what's the high school average grade required for admission into the Arts program? say I want to major in something like Poli science or history.</p>

<p>I heard a lot of the classes have 1800 students per class, unheard of in the UK or US and this makes for little feedback/tutorial from faculty.</p>

<p>How many are kicked out % wise after first term and first year?</p>

<p>A family friend declined scholarship to Carlton and went to UT Engineering Science.3 months later was asked by the dean to leave.</p>

<p>My best friend is at UT and i attended one of their classes b4 n yes there are classes of over 1000 people in first year.</p>

<p>Most people can get into poli sci with a 75% </p>

<p>UT is a commuter school so res life is kinda dead</p>

<p>And UT ranks lowest in student satisfaction, and all my friends hate UT. Don't know about people begin asked to leave though.</p>

<p>

Although i am desperately trying to transfer, I must say, UofT is a terrific school, and many students here are definitely intelligent
I live on campus
The residences are very disimilar, I have lived in 3 residences so far, and 2 IMO are terrific!(Woodsworth and Morrison Hall)
Yes, you are given questionaire for room assignment, but they don't read the questionaires, and you have to realize! when you come to UofT there are good students (10-15% tops) and then there are the mediocre students (35-40%) and the rest are what i call "the annoying students"- These students got in because of grade inflation in high school or they came here to party, first time away from parents and they are wild and annoying! If you get one of them as your roommate, you can pretty much say bye bye to your GPA. I had to cope with one last year, it was painful!
I am in the science program at UofT</p>

<p>

TRUE, I had 3 classes out of 5 with over 1000 students last year and this year i have 4 out of 5 with over 1000. You aren't going to learn much in lecture, it's about reading the textbook on your own and learning the material. I don't know what's going to happen next year, i really hope class sizes get smaller. And most times tutorials aren't good, since the TAs don't speak English :(. But despite that, there are some terrific profs who will make you feel like you get your bang for your buck (i.e. Prof Barrett and Prof Roberts from the zoology department who teach BIO150 in first year, Prof Quinlan who teach Chemistry, Prof Baker who teaches Biochemistry, Prof Harrison who teaches Physics for life science etc.)

Not many, i would think about 2-3%? Many stay, but they are on probation. Just keep in mind that at UofT, only 10% of the students will have a gpa of 3.5 or higher. that's about 5000 students out of 50000 from the 3 campuses and at UTSG, probably 3000. and i believe that 25% will have 3.0-3.5. </p>

<p>Your family friend was asked to leave the school? Eng Sci is the toughest program at UofT, it really tests how many days you can study w/o sleep IMO. The study they do is just incredible, they take 6 courses or 7 courses/sem, normally we take 5 and many take 4 or less.
Normally in eng sci, when a student is performing poorly, the registrar usually "recommends" a transfer to a lower program in the faculty of engineering: for examples, Electrical engineering or civil engineering. I don't think he was asked to leave the school was he? Unless you have done something extremely wrong like swearing at prof., you won't be asked to leave, you'll be advised to stay back a year, so UofT can get more of your money ;)</p>

<p>All in all, i tihnk uoft is pretty good, but the school is too big, but that's what the school needs, it's one of the top researching facilities in the world and one of the biggest employers in canada, who else is going to pay the scientists their salaries? Not the government ;)
It's all about us and our tuitions :(</p>

<p>WOOOOOOOOOO......from all the posts above.......I dont see any valid reason to apply to U o T...............</p>

<p>thanks so much for your help,Newbyreborn :)</p>

<p>but all i want to say is the same as above ........lol</p>

<p>I'd better go to the States.</p>

<p>Yes, thank you for answering the questions, greatly appreciated.
Although I too am now kinda discouraged from applying there..</p>

<p>It is true, unless you absolutely love a specific course here, or you love a prof here, then UofT should really be your fall back.
and not to say UofT is bad, it's just it is a dog eat dog school, pretty much the survival of the fittest, because they have QUOTA!. And since you guys are on CC, you'll probably be the fittest if you come here ;)
Best of luck to you all :D</p>

<p>Are the problems that have been highlighted about UofT occur across the board in all of Canada higher education institutions? or are they specific to UofT?</p>

<p>most likely just u ot t.
never heard of big classes like 1000+ elsewhere</p>

<p>I know someone in canada who said U of T has a **** undergrad programme. She's attending Queens, and she says she wants to go there for graduate school (med).</p>

<p>im in the states right now and i wanna go to u of t!!!!!!!
im canadian tho</p>

<p>Queen's and Mcgill would make much better alternatives.</p>

<p>u of t still has the best reputation in canada. mcgill is number 2. if that's a factor...</p>

<p>Yep McGill is certainly most prestigious, but U of T is still pretty prestigious while being far less selective than McGill.</p>
