i dont really know how matthews halls compares to canaday hall. which is bigger, which is more adavnced in terms of amenities. canaday is closer to annenberg, but how much closer, is it like way closer so only a few meters. which has single dorms, which has toilets with less traffic...... so on and so forth, i know we can't choose which dorm to go to, but if canaday hall is better, i can easily say that i need to go there cuz there are prayer rooms for muslims and there are 5 prayers a day so that makes it more convenient..

Canaday will usually be n rooms (i.e. the number of people “n” living in the room have “n” rooms) - so you can choose whether or not to have someone sleep in the common room or have two people share one bedroom. Both have communal bathrooms. Canaday is a bit more convenient since it’s usually just 2/3 rooms while Matthews has the more typical long hallways of rooms, so you might have to walk ten seconds more to get to the bathroom. Matthews would be my personal preference having spent plenty of time in both. Canaday is no more than a minute closer to Annenberg plus you have to deal with the fire department and church bells. Canaday houses around 240ish while Matthews is in the 140s. Actual single dorms in the sense that you are the only person with a key to your room does not exist in either. Finally, Canaday has washing machines in the basement while Matthews is assigned to Weld. Sorry for my stream-of-consciousness description. I hope I was informative and clear.

well its not like i want total privacy, but im a big-time sucker for looks and i just wish canaday would look like matthews. and i rather be left to my own dorm cuz im soooo easily distracted. sometimes the action around me will encourage me to focus more but i dont know which side of me will take over. the fact that canaday has prayer rooms is gr8 and obviously it being closest to annenberg is only to a small degree compared to matt so thats out. bathrooms are a major concern for me, i’d rather end up in bathrooms used by less ppl and cleaned less often than in bathrooms that are used daily. i dont even know what to think anymore lol, HEEEEELLLLLPPP

I live in Matthews, and have friends in Canaday. The morning church bells are the bane of any student in Canaday; everyone who lives in the yard hates being woken up by them at 8:40 each weekday, but Canaday literally is fifty feet away from the bell tower. The rooms in each dorm are on the larger side as far as I can tell. We do have more people using our bathroom than Canaday does, but it’s cleaned every other day and I really only run into three or four people in the bathroom daily on average. Alternatively, there were a few incidents at the beginning of the year that were less than desirable concerning our toilets. The greatest thing about Matthews is that we’re centrally located, so we have a fantastic view of the yard on the side that faces it. We can also see the John Harvard statue, which is a plus if you enjoy people-watching. And nothing beats the sun streaming in through your windows on a sunny day.

can i visit other dorms like to use facilites in them or are they exclusive to their residents? what concernes me about the bathrooms is how clean they are. like with matthews/canaday on average how many people will share a bathroom. i know u can use anyone u like anywhere, but ppl will use whats closest to them. so how many ppl on average use them, and how clean are they… [im sorry, im not a neat freak, but im soooo used to using my own bathroom, and i only use public bathrooms when it involves minimal interaction with the bathroom surfaces lol]

I heard that Matthews is the “best”? Aren’t there also three that are located relatively far away? Can we mark our preference on the sheet that Harvard is supposed to send us?

Thanks!

There are four freshmen dorms that are “relatively” far away. Namely, Apley Court which is half a block away from the yard, and the Union dorms: Pennypacker, Greenough, and Hurlbut. I always like to think that my freshmen dorm of Grays was the best, though, most of the dorms are desirable, imo. No preferences can really be made, you can sometimes use clever language in the open ended part of your housing survey, but overall, it’s going to be random.
