I’m Canadian and I plan on working in Canada after college. I have been accepted to the best Canadian universities but have also applied to some top schools in the states like Stanford, Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. Would it be easier to find work in Canada with a degree from Stanford or Cornell or will I be wasting my money when I can just go to a Canadian school?
Were you accepted to those US college?
Many years ago I was a Canadian with degrees from two top US universities (Bachelors at MIT, Masters at Stanford). When I applied for jobs in Canada, I kept getting replies “We don’t hire US citizens”. I had to stay in the US. I would have been far better off if one of my degrees was from McGill rather than MIT.
Also, be aware that university in the US is insanely expensive.
If I were you, I would get my Bachelor’s at a top university in Canada, and then reconsider if and when you look for a graduate school.
The top Canadian unis are really tough (as tough or arguably tougher than Ivies/equivalents), but yes, Canadian firms recruit Canadian unis. They feel no need to look south when Canadian publics give them the talent they want.
