Hey guys, I am from Canada and am having a little bit of trouble with where to apply...

my stats are:
sat 2280 (one sitting) M-740, CR-800, W-740

Sat II's
chem - 800
math II - 800

no IB/AP at my school, but i rank in the top 4 of 300 students
average range is around 98-99% for senior year, around 96% for all highschool, not sure how the gpa works for that

I was planning on applying to:
washinton university st. louis
jhu
duke
tufts
cornell
upenn
princeton
yale
stanford

my only problem is that I will need financial aid, and since only yale and princeton are need-blind those are the only ones I'm applying to with financial aid.

what do you guys think? can I apply for financial aid in some of the other ones? I am willing to find some way or other to pay tuition if applying with financial aid is going to hurt my chances..
do u think there are some other schools i should be applying to?

These schools will cost over $200k to attend. What “other” way do you have to come up with THAT much money?

how much can your parents contribute?

These are all reaches. Are you applying to any matches or safeties?

I was thinking that I would take loans for the first year or so and then my mom will be able to get her visa and I will be a us resident so the cost will go down anyways?
thats why i was kind of unsure, I mean duke only has 20 seats for financial aid for international students, and im positive that there are better applicants than me.

and I’m applying to schools in canada that will give me scholarships so i dont really see the point i guess of applying to schools that arent as good as the ones i can attend in canada? and i thought tufts wasnt that much of a reach… ?
thanks for the input guys

I’m assuming you consider all (or most of) your domestic Canadian picks as your matches/safeties. Otherwise, I would change the list above (you may not get into any of these universities !).

I’m confused. you’re thinking of borrowing $50k-100k for the first year or two of college?

That is too much to borrow for undergrad. What is your intended career?

Can your mom afford to co-sign your loans? If so, would she be willing to do so?

i’m trying to go into medicine, but i myself was thinking that the loans might be too much. My stats aren’t really good enough to get accepted into princeton or yale i guess but those are the only ones that will provide me financial aid?
that’s why im sort of unsure whether there’s any point to applying to the rest of the colleges without financial aid? is it just better for me to apply with financial aid and lower my chances of getting in?

my mom is definately willing to co-sign the loans but otherwise i dont think that my parents have much saved up or will be able to contribute much.

and @bruno i am applying to 4 canadian unis that are matches/safeties s

If you’re going to be going to med school then you better minimize your undergrad loans. You’ll have to borrow a lot for med school (if you go in the US). There’s no reason to go to a top school for undergrad as pre-med. As long as you go to a good school that is strong in math, bio, chem, and physics, and you do well on your MCATs, you can go to med school.

Is your mom willing to cosign and HELP pay for the loans? If not, this is not a good idea.

*i dont think that my parents have much saved up or will be able to contribute much.

If your mom’s income is lowish, she might not qualify to co-sign the loans.
