Chances for Canadian (High GPA Low SAT)

Hey, I'm just wondering what my chances are at Cornell, Stanford (I don't think I have any chance there lol) and Waterloo also please post any good schools in the United States that fit my profile. Here are my stats...

I goto a good highschool (Holy Cross Catholic Secondary) in Ontario, Canada only a few people have gone to ivy league from our school though, a few years ago some girl went to Harvard but most people don't bother applying to the states.
I live just with my mom and our income is below $25,000 a year american (I don't know if that affects anything other than me needing financial aid).

GPA - 4.7/5.0 according to another thread. 3.7/4.0 just using regual conversion. My school doesn't rank but I'm definetly top 1-2% out of 400.

SAT I - CR 630 M 620 W 570... I know they're weak but definetly retaking in the fall.

SAT II's - Taking them in the fall... Math II, Chemistry and Biology

Classes - No AP's (school doesn't offer them, didn't know they existed untill this year). All my courses are the hardest available at my school.

Grade 11 classes were - Computer Engineering (97%), Biology (93%), Accounting (97%), Chemistry 90%, Physics (93%), English (86%), World Religions (86%) and Functions and Relations (90%).

Grade 12 courses are - Accounting (94% taken in grade 11), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geometry and Discrete Math, Calculas, English, Economics and Philosophy.

EC's - Volunteering at a camp for disabled children for 128 hours (2 summers)
School band in grade 9 and half of grade 10
School soccer team in grade 9,10,11 and soon to be 12
Competitive soccer team for the last 5 years including a month in England.
Working at a hotel for the last 2 years.
Worked at the same camp I volunteered at for 1 summer.

That's all I can think of right if I forgot anything just ask I'll post it. Please post my chances at Stanford, Cornell and Waterloo don't worry about offending me, I know they are reaches so post any matches. Also, my intended major is Mechanical Engineering, I was considering business, that's why I have the business courses but I prefer Engineering.

Opps, don't know what I was thinking when I put the hours at the camp instead of 128 it should be 640 (8 hours a day/ 5 days a week/ 8 weeks a summer/ 2 summers). Also, someone please post!

bummmmmmmmp someone must have something to say!

someone post!

well u can try Northeastern, American University/Match
Stanford is a big reach but if u get 750+ in ur SAT IIs you have a shot

what about cornell and waterloo?

dont convert your gpa- your average in canada is fine (probably not for an american high school)

If those are the schools that you are applying to, have fun at Waterloo!

anyone else? I don't understand about my average though... it's 93 but what do you mean by it's fine in canada but not america?

Lsn
many americans are applying for Canadian Universities such as McGill UToronto, UBC waterloo, try ur chances there
If u do as I advised u for Stanford you'll even have a better chance at Cornell

sorry I dont have any Waterloo experience
and a 4.7/5.0 is not a 3.7/4 its about 3.8

bye

Canadian universities are very easy to get into. Just about every person I've talked to simply sent in a transcript and clicked a button on the website. Really, you don't have to worry much about Canadian universities. Even the most competitive courses only require like an 88% and there's no interview or written work or written test, etc. So you're basically into Waterloo, McGill, UBC, UofT, Queen's, McMasters, etc.

chris - im going to be blunt about stanford...dont waste your time. If you take your SAT's again and get to 2000 you will have a decent chance at Cornell. I had about the same avg as you (from ontario) with about the same SAT score as you, excellent essays etc, and the only universities i got into were Boston U, UofMiami. I got rejected at Tufts, Vanderbilt and waitlisted at tulane and case western. Frankly, if you are worried about the financial situation (because believe me, there is a serious financial situation when you pay 50k a year), then I would tell you to go to Waterloo or another canadian school....they are fine schools and if you are unhappy you can attempt to transfer. But for now, take your SATs again because thats the only thing holding you back from getting into a really good school...or getting merit aid from a good school.

thanks, ya that's my plan for SAT's. I was going to prep this summer but then my school messed up my schedual and now I'm in summer school taking grade 11 physics (the mark i put up earlier was my mark then, it's 97 now :D). I'll still have a month before regular school starts to prep though so hopefully I can get it up to 2000.

2000 isnt good enough- just settle for waterloo, it will save you money and the agony

2000 gives him a chance but youre right about the money. If you wana do engineering of math, Waterloo is just as good if not better (especially for math) than Cornell. Take advantage of the relatively cheap undergrad canada has to offer.
