I just have a question on high schools. I wasn't sure if this is the correct place to post, so forgive me if I'm wrong!
Anyhow, I am aspiring to go to an Ivy League university (namely those with big names :D), but I am a Canadian citizen. I understand that if and when I apply to an American university as a Canadian citizen, I'll be sent in to the international student queue, which seems to have larger competition. Last year, I wanted to move from Canada to go to a boarding school named Philips Academy Andover, but with my laziness and procrastination, I didn't do so (I have fixed that problem now, somewhat).
So basically what I'm asking is if it's worth it to go to an American high school for when I apply to university. Will it affect my chances?
Please note that I am going in to grade 10 this September. I realize that this is extremely late for me to finally realize about high school, but I just need to information nonetheless :). So I would go to Philips Academy Andover in grade 11, or if I have to, I can pull back down a grade and do grade 10 again, seeing how the American education system is highly different from that of Canada's.
And I also realize that I need to get in to the school to even consider it, but let's just take it in a theoretical sense so I know if it is worthwhile.

So if you could please... err... chance me? :D on this, it'd be super greatly appreciated.

I personally would (wouldn’t do the year over again though, just self study in the summer vacation) but are you sure you could get into HYP (I’m assuming you mean those) even if you would go to the US? Of course the US has a lot of other good uni’s so yeah, I would.

Thanks a lot for the reply <3
And yes, I am trying to get in to HYP, as it’s been one of my lifelong dreams (although I can’t say my life has been very long so far!).

Do you know if going to Andover will affect my chances of being accepted in to HYP, or other American universities?

I doubt it will effect your chances. The only thing I have heard about in terms of private schools helping students odds is that they tend to have better counselors. Switching to an American school will help, but I doubt as much as you would like. HYP all accept lees then 10 percent of applicants and you would be surprised at the stats of people they reject (look at the results form for proof).

So would it be worthwhile to go to PA?

And do you know if I would be treated as a domestic or international student if I am a Canadian citizen?
And if I was considered international as a Canadian, if I went to an American high school, would I be considered domestic then?

going to PA may lower your chances because you are applying as part of the student population there. You will be treated as a international student since your official address is still in Canada and you are a Canadian citizen.

If you’re going to Andover in order to increase your chances of going to HYP, don’t do it. If you want to go to Andover for a better learning experience in high school, by all means apply.

yeah, they would be, unless you already go to a pretty challenging school getting A’s or you’re a genius. It’s worth going to Andover or Exeter, but it won’t help you get into college. I got 99th percentile on the SSAT, but I’m in the 37th percentile or lower in my year at Exeter. Yes, more kids go to better schools, but generally its more difficult. But, I stress, very worth it.

hi there,
i was a new sophomore at phillips exeter and i’m an international student (i’m from the philippines). since canada is much more well-off than the philippines, i’m not sure if i can speak for you as an international student - i left the philippines because i felt like i wasn’t being challenged enough in class and i felt like i could push myself more. i don’t know if that’s how you feel at home in canada, but that’s certainly how i felt. and yes, it does make it more difficult to apply to ivies, but the experience of boarding school overall is more than worth it.
