Canceling College Visit

Hey Everyone,

I want to cancel a college visit but I am afraid that doing so would lead to admissions frowning upon my application. Would the school be specifically notified of the cancelation and if so will it hurt my admission chances?

Thanks

why would you even think that

this is a college, a public place that has hundreds of people that tour it yearly

a college is not going to think you hate them because you cancelled a visit

I REALLY think you need to take a break from college confidential for a while like seriously this is absurd

My D and I had to cancel a visit, too. We called and spoke with someone in admissions, telling them that our scheduling needs had changed and we wouldn’t be able to make it. We said we hoped we could reschedule very soon. The admissions person (no doubt a secretary) was very nice and thanked us for letting them know. This was a couple days in advance.

It’s just a fact of life and scheduling that sometimes plans change. The more notice the better for cancelling - just basic manners. If you can reschedule (and want to reschedule), do so in your phone call.

So if I don’t think that I can even reschedule, it won’t hurt my chances?

I rescheduled a couple of visits this summer for S17. The response from each school was,in essence, thank you for letting us know so that we can take someone off the wait list. Please let us know when you can visit. S17 has since visited one of the canceled schools and may not even visit or apply to the others.

I don’t believe that rescheduling will hurt you. Failing to show up might, without prior notice, might.

I will notify the college that I can’t make it but I don’t think that I can reschedule either. I want to make sure that no effort to reschedule a visit won’t hurt me. I’ve also been to their visits to my state and I live a whole continental US distance away from the college. Do you think I’m okay?

I would notify the college that you can’t make it and that due to other commitments/financial considerations (whatever is the reason) and that unfortunately given the distance that you don’t think you will be able to schedule a campus visit in the near future. Let them know that you have already been to a presentation by XY at AB and are excited about applying to the college. If the college offers interviews you might ask in the same email if you can schedule an interview with a local alumni.

College don’t expect that students fly across the country to visit campus. It should not hurt you.

@oPhilippos There are schools that consider expressed interest in their admissions decisions and visiting the school counts as expressing interest. So the OP’s question was a perfectly reasonable one. Maybe you should settle down a bit until you know more.

@dncn888 I think that, other than post #1, you got excellent advice. From everything I’ve read, if you can’t get across the country to visit a school, no one will hold it against you. Cancel politely and take advantage of whatever local opportunities you have to express interest.

Thanks!
