I got a phone call from a Brown alumnus yesterday about an interview. When I called back today to confirm the interview, he told me that another applicant had already responded and taken the only time slot available. He then suggested that I contact Brown to see if I could organize an interview with another alumnus in my area, as there are supposedly plenty.

What are the chances that I’ll get another interview? Are they even allowed to reject applicants on the basis of a lack of time? I mean, he’s only supposed to be interviewing two applicants total, and in the span of three months…

Sorry if I come off as rather bitter. Brown is my dream school, and I think that I actually have a shot at getting in, and I want to grab every opportunity that comes by.

Relax.

Your interviewer wasn’t supposed to do what they did. They should have gotten in touch with their regional person and asked from them to reassign you. It’s a real shame that they did this. If I were you, I would go ahead and contact the admissions office, and tell them exactly what happened. They should tell you how to proceed.

Even if you don’t get to interview, a situation like this is not equivalent to you saying no to an interview. So, don’t sweat it.

As to whether you get another interview, that depends on how overwhelmed your area is. It is really early in the process; our write-ups aren’t due for another month. There is plenty of time to arrange another interview.

Some people are really busy. They have jobs, commutes, travel for work, family, church, volunteer commitments, etc. This person obviously only wanted to do a couple of interviews, and that’s his choice. What’s a shame is that when he got more than two names, he should have immediately contacted his area chair and told him/her to reassign students.

Call admissions. They’ll give you the name of the area chair, who you will then contact to arrange an interview.
