I was registered as an international student for fall 2009 but my family has realized that we cannot afford for me to go, so I will now be going to a university in my country. I did, however, accept my housing offer already. I've researched cancelling it- basically you send a form in by mail. But it says that if they cannot find a replacement, you have to pay the full price- $ 14,000. Does anyone know how serious this is, or how common it is for them not to find a replacement? I'm really stressing over this because my family cannot afford it.

Contact housing directly and find out exactly what steps you need to take to cancel your housing without penalty.

They will find you a replacement. Fall program for freshman students take up open spots (they have not been offered contracts yet).
