Candidate's Choice Application

I was just wondering if I am eligible for the Candidate's Choice Application, do I stilll need to submit the Common App and the supplements? Also, do I need to write the required essays questions? Or do I just complete the Candidate's Choice Application??? I'm really confused.

I would check with Admissions. They are very good getting back to you. By the way, what are the qualifications for the Candidate's Choice Application? RPI is one of my daughter's top choices. She did not get the Medal so she can't apply Early. Thanks

There's not much to the Candidate's Choice Application. You can either submit that or the Common App. I just applied using the Candidate's Choice App. With the latter you get your decision from the school within 28 days, unlike using the common App. The qualifications for getting to use the Candidate's Choice App isn't very high. Try submiting a request for infromation and they might e-mail you the offer to use it.

Hmm... I don't know what the qualifications for the Candidate's Choice Application are. I just got an e-mail from RPI and it stated that I'm eligible to use it.

Wait...you can't apply early decision unless you have the medal? is this true?

flyers, RPI has ED, not EA, unless you are a medalist, then you can apply EA. The candidates choice, from what I understand, is made available to just about anyone who has shown an interest/inquiry to RPI. From what I understand, as well, is it is Early decision - binding.

flyersonices7: RPI is binding early decision. Medalists get an early action application and I am not sure about the Candidates Choice application.

So is the Candidate's Choice app just a simpler version of the regular ED application?

are you guys sure the Candidate's Choice Application is binding?

I do not think it's binding (don't know for sure), but I do think it's a crock.

My son is in no way, shape or form an RPI student on paper, and he got one. It's just a marketing ploy.

Here's what they say on the RPI website. Looks like it's just a simplified application. Nothing here about ED or EA:

Students may also be eligible to apply via our Candidate’s Choice Application. This streamlined application is available to students who have expressed an interest in Rensselaer through a request for information, visit to campus, attendance at an open house, participation in a chat, or other interaction. For more information on this application, please complete and submit the request for materials form.

The Candidate's Choice App requires a personal statement, but it says "250 words or more." Mine came out to be about 1000 words...about 2 pages with 1.5 spacing. Is this acceptable or too long?

The Candidate's Choice Application (CCA) should be preferred by applicants over the Common Application. CCA offers the advantage of:

• Fewer questions
• An admission decision within 28 days
• Earlier notification of financial aid award

With the CCA you can apply:

• Early Decision (binding) — The deadline to submit your application is November 1, 2006
• Early Action* (nonbinding) — The deadline to submit your application is November 1, 2006 * For Rensselaer Medal winners only
• Regular Decision — The deadline to submit your application is January 15, 2007

The application is considered complete once RPI receives your School Report/b, **Academic Recommendation, and the $50 application fee.

I just finalized my application today using the Candidate's Choice App. It was really easy to use. I just wish the first marking period was over and my grades could be sent in...so I could get a decision soon. Keeping the fingers crossed haha.

If you are applying online, the limit is 7000 characters. That works out to approximately 1350 words. You should be good to go.

Isnt the common app more comprehensive?

and what if I wish to send supplemental materials such as a recording of my musical performance?

So you think that if I apply with the candidates choice application by the deadline January 15, it’s not binding. I’m scared that it might be.

Check for sure with RPI. They also accept Common App. That’s what my son did, even though he received the Candidate’s Choice app. (He was already applying to 4 other Common App schools).

No, candidates choice is not binding. All that is a fancy name to get you to apply. You might be getting these Paper applications from other places too, it’s all about advertising. If you see an application sent directly to you, statistically, you are more likely to apply.

No, it is not binding. The Early Decision deadlines are long past.

January 15 is just the normal Regular Decision deadline.
