Candidate's Choice Essay Question

Hello,

So I'm filling out the Candidate's Choice and there are only two questions, Personal Statement and How did you find out about RPI. Do I also have to submit an essay, RPI Admissions: Freshman Essay Requirement

Thanks.

Nope, those are the only two you need to fill out.

K Thanks A Lot

Unforntunately Joshua, your incorrect. Upon talking to the admissions office, Candidate's Choice applicants do have to submit an essay....

A good lesson
for something as imortant as fact- do your own research. This is a great place to come for opinions about the school etc, but if you need to know what this or any school requires, go to the source

The personal statement is the essay for all applicants except those applying for architecture, electronic arts or an accelerated program, where the essay has to be on a specific topic.

"unforntunately Joshua, your incorrect. Upon talking to the admissions office, Candidate's Choice applicants do have to submit an essay...."

No... fortunately for you, you are the incorrect one here. Your personal statement is one of the following:

• All Other Programs: Choose one topic listed below or submit a
personal essay of your choice
1) Describe a significant experience or achievement that has special
meaning to you.
2) Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you and
describe that influence.
3) “They’ll say I impacted the 21st century by my work in...”

You enter in your essay on the "college plans" section of the application online, or include it in the envelope you send your whole application in.

You are confusing the terms "personal statement" and "essay", in this situation they are identical.

If you want to be critical, there is also a third "how did you spend your last 2 summers?" essay.

I received the Candidate's Choice app in the mail, but I'm choosing instead to apply through the Common App (I already have it filled out--it's so much easier than completing that big form).

I don't see any required essays on the Common App supplement (except for the special programs). So...what's up with that?

The common app (which is how I applied [and subsequently was accepted]) has the main essay which you most likely have also finished, as well as the RPI supplement. If I remember correctly, the supplement for RPI asked how you first became interested in the school.

Outside of the supplement, the common app also requires you to write a short answer (150 words or less) to the topic of "In the space provided below, please elaborate on one of your activities (extracurricular, personal activities, or work experience)".

You should treat that question as equally heavy as the supplement.

I need help too! I was planning to apply to RPI but now their deadline is up today! I have the common app all filled out and ready but I am still confused about the essay. There is the common app essay where you are given five possible choices plus a "topic of your choice," then on the supplement there is a "required essay" portion with three choices for various area's of study (architecture, electronic arts, and and law/physician), but the supplement only tells you about those three choices, whereas on the "application instructions" you are given those same questions for the specific areas of study plus two possible questions ("or an essay of your choice") for "all other areas of study." So if am NOT going into those specific areas of study (architecture, electronic arts, and and law/physician) then do I just post the "all other areas of study question" in the common app essay? OR do I post it in the supplement essay section AND post a regular essay in the common app essay section? In other words: Am I writing one full essay or two? If I do only one full essay than which essay section do I leave blank?

Only one full essay.

If you were applying to one of the SPECIFIC areas of study listed, you would have to write an additional essay for the supplement.
