Hello, first of all, it is important to mention that I am an international student. When registering for the CollegeBoard web site, I have to fill out a form which includes giving my surname. The problem is that my surname involves a letter that is not in the English alphabet. The web site then interprets it as a symbol and does not let me register. What should I do? I’ve tried writing an email to the CollegeBoard web site, but they reply with an automated message which has nothing to do with the problem I am facing. (I will be registering for the SAT and it was said in the rules that the surname that I give to the web site must exactly match my real surname, otherwise I will be denied the opportunity to take the test)
@SATproblems Do you have an ID (such as a passport) that spells or romanizes your name without the use of special symbols? (example: ü --> u, é --> e, ç --> c). If so, use that.
No, I do not. The problem itself is rather peculiar, considering that there had to be people registering from foreign countries.
Have you tried calling CollegeBoard customer service?
I will do that, in the meantime I thought someone perhaps would have come up with a solution.
To whomever it may concern, CollegeBoard instructed to use English alphabet equivalent, instead of your native language letters.
I had problems too, so I called customer service and they helped me straighten out the problem. Be sure you call during their office ours (EST for the USA).
They insist the your name is registered exactly how it appears on your picture ID, so yours is an interesting problem.
If the SAT folks in New Jersey cannot help you register on-line or via the mail, you can always take the ACT.
Best of luck.
