I recieved an email from Washinton and Lee university after I sent in my application last week saying that I cannot apply as a freshman because I'm already enrolled in a university course.

The situation is that I'm an international student from Myanmar (Burma) who's currently doing my undergraduate studies in the UK (this is my first year here).

I chose to apply to the states as a freshman because I'm not really interested in the current course that I'm enrolled in and I got here in the first place out of neccesity, not interest.

You see, last year when I finished high school, I only applied to and got accepted to universities in the UK and in Singapore. The one that I'm currently in (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow) offered me a scholarship (but on the condition that I have to study electrical engineering, which is something I'm not really interested in) and I tought, "well, I might as well go there because its either I spend my time doing somthing meaningful like enrolling in university or I go back to burma and waste my time for at least another year".

And so I got to the UK, and only some months ago did i realise I actually wanted to go to the US, mainly because of its liberal arts programmes and so decided to apply for Fall 2005 entry as a freshman. I wouldn't mind not getting credit for the courses I am doing at my current university, as long as I get to study some things that I'm actually interested in.

I think quite a lot of internatinals (especially from developing countries) are in the same situation as I am. Usually because of the uncertainties of their lives, they have to grab the first oppurtunity that comes in their way even if its not what they are genuinely interested in.
