Can't decide what I want to be...

Little info about myself:
High School Junior
Rank- 45/710 (It will hopefully get better) School is exemplary
PSAT-190 :(
SAT-1970 (It will retake it January even though the score is good enough for the college I want to go to)
College I want to go to- UT Austin (I should hopefully get in)

My problem is that after all of these years I still don't know what career and major I should pursue in college. I am struck between Medicine and Business. I come from a family that has a legacy of doctors. Obviously my parents want me to become one as well. However, they are not forcing me to become a Doctor either. I sort of feel that I should continue the family legacy. I even volunteered at Baylor surgery and enjoyed it more than I expected. On the other hand I also have a passion for business. I already have a small part time business on Amazon. I don't make too much money (about $2000 in 5 months of selling maybe 100 small items like video games) but I find it fascinating observing how the market fluctuate and predicting what the market will be like in the future. However, I don't know if this field has really good job security. That's one of the reasons why my parents are so hesitant. They know for sure that my job will be secure in the Medical field. In school over all I think I am well rounded. I excel in all of my classes pretty equally. I guess the amount of time I need to spend in school for either field is also an issue.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what I should strive for?

The technology field is growing (computer science/engineering, software engineering ,etc.) Maybe you’d like it?

The good thing is you can go to college and be undecided about your major. Take a few classes and then decide what you like best, no reason to have to decide now.

Take organic chemistry and see how you do before you decide to become a doctor.

How many years of school will i need for each profession?

Medicine: 4 yrs undergrad, 4 yrs med school, 3-6 yrs residency
Business: 4 yrs undergrad, 2 yrs business school (if nec. But most likely it will be). You could also get other masters degrees and work in business. For example, Treasury Secy Geithner has a Masters in East Asian Stdies and International Econ, not an MBA.

Maybe you could do something with a biotech firm would allow you to get the best of both worlds.

Many people don’t know what they want to be until they get out of high school, also when they’re in college. I want to become a Veterinarian. Yeah, I had double thoughts because you need to take a lot of math, and science. In the 6th grade I always wanted to become a lawyer. I always like wanting to do something busy, and yell to the judge lol. Then I wanted to become a Botanist. In the 8th grade I loved plants, the world around me. I read more about it and realized it probably wasn’t for me. Then I wanted to become a physician assistant. I don’t really like to be relied on, because I always mess things up. So I thought being an assistant would be good for me. Then as months passed I just forgot about it. Finally in 9th and now 10th grade I decided to become a Veterinarian. I’m trying really hard, taking appropriate math courses and science courses. Today as a 10th grader I still want to be a Lawyer, Botanist, Physician Assistant, and a Vet also a Biology Teacher! lol But I now that no one can change my mind, and It’s all up to me. I have the power to make me ME! Someday I’ll know what’s right for me, what makes me happy and keep me going. Good Luck :)

Wall Street or bust. =)
Even if you can’t stand banking or trading, having it on your resume will set you up for life.

Few people are lucky enough to know exactly what they want to do for the rest of their life in high school. On that thought…relax! Colleges will understand if you don’t have your life planned out for the next 10 years. Lots of college students have no idea what they want to major in…trust me, you have time.

I myself decided on my major this past summer (between my junior and senior years). I thought about my interests, made a list of careers that matched my interests, talked to my counselor, and did lots and lots and LOTS of research. In the end I found a career and corresponding majors that match my personality and interests entirely! Like you I was also pretty worried about not knowing what I wanted to major in, but in the end everything worked out great  I’m sure you’ll find out what major you’d rather do! Do some research online. If that doesn’t work, experiment your first year of college by taking both business and science courses. The first year or two of college usually consist of core requirements, so you have plenty of time to decide.
