Can't wrap my head around how to best send scores; would you please help?

I actually called College Board with this question and didn’t feel like I got a clear answer; probably because I couldn’t make my situation clear. Also did a seach on the “SAT” forum here and didn’t come up with much. So I appreciate any help from the experienced parents here.

S took the SAT in March and won’t be taking it again. He took two SAT subject tests in June and now wants to retake one of them in October. He didn’t take advantage of the four free reports back in the spring mostly because his college list was still such a moving target.

With this registration, he’d now like to use the opportunity to send four free reports, but he doesn’t want to send the Oct subject retest until he sees how he’s done. To organize my rambling story into questions:

1) If he selects past scores to be sent as part of the October registration, do the October scores get sent automatically too, even before S sees them?

2) Since all his schools require SAT 2’s, and he will therefore incur a fee for each school anyway after he has the Oct score in hand, should he just wait and see how he does in October and then send everything and kiss the freebies goodbye? (His two EA schools—Nov 1—will accept Oct scores.)

Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Yes to both. Wait to get the scores and then use the score choice option and send what you want.

mutti…I believe the answer is 1. yes, the October scores will go automatically if he sends with October registration. BUT- from what I understand, all SAT II scores for the same test get sent anyway. That is:
If he took Spanish and got a 620 then retook Spanish and got a higher score, both scores would automatically go. But if he took Spanish, got a 620, decided to take French instead and got a 720, he could send the French and no one would see the Spanish.

So–if he is going to retake an SAT II in October–both scores will go regardless of which is better.

Thank you Gwen and kleibo. Gwen, what you described does not seem to be disclosed on the CB website (or just as likely that I couldn’t find it). That’s why I’m so grateful to the parents here who’ve been through all this before. I wonder why you can chose which dates to send when you’ve done an SATI retake but seemingly don’t get that choice for an SATII retake. Sigh… So they will see if your score goes DOWN…ugh…unfair.

^If that’s the case they’ve changed things, because when my son applied there was a long list of test scores and you checked off for each college which test scores should get sent. Only the best subject score tests needed to be sent. That said if you apply to a college that says they want all the test scores it’s clear they want all the SAT1 scores, but it’s not always as clear if they want all the subject test scores or not. Especially if you’ve retaken a test. My younger son retook both US History (to see if he could get an 800 after a 790  - he didn’t btw and Biology (to see if he’d do better in M than E - he didn’t - same exact score!). I know we sent both Bio scores, I can’t remember if we sent both History scores - there was only a 10 point difference so it clearly wasn’t going to hurt him.

As to the first question - the free scores send every single score you’ve ever had, so no longer such a great idea unless you are applying to some schools that require (or strongly urge seeing) all of them anyway.

mathmom, you can check whichever scores you want for the free scores too, at least I could this morning when I tried (and then aborted) the registration and score selection.

^Cool.

It certainly makes sense. (I don’t think that’s the way it worked two years ago.)

I haven’t done this before-- I’m repeating what was explained on the 2012 board-- so I may be wrong!

I think he’ll just wait until all the scores are in at the end of October and then pay to send them everywhere they need to be. I wish he could transfer his four freebies to someone else; what a waste. Thanks for the advice; I appreciate it.

The free reports are a risk and reward. If you are expected to do well in the test you are taking, you get to send it to some of the schools. If you are not certain, then better not to send them out.

My kid did about three separate rounds of SAT. None were a repeat and so I am not certain what happens if you take the same subject twice. I was playing with the 4 freebies on the third round and was able to pick and choose those that were already completed with no control over the new ones. I ended up submitting all the freebies to State schools and some of the safeties.

I’m not sure my daughter sent her ACT scores to ANY of the places she’s going to end up applying LOL, and her most recent ACT is the one she wants to use. I believe she did NOT do the writing on this last one, anyone know if she can send a composite from one date and writing from another date?

You can’t mix and match on the ACT. You have to choose a sitting and send all the scores from that sitting. If she didn’t take the writing portion and the school requires it, you either have to send the earlier test score or send both scores.

^ I don’t see that requirement for ACT on the common app. that they all need to be on a single date. It may be the rule at some schools but not case in commonapp itself.

ACT tests
Exam Dates Past and Future: Please report the dates for up to three tests you have taken or will be taking.

Date One (mm/yyyy) Date Two (mm/yyyy) Date Three (mm/yyyy)

Best Scores: Please report the highest individual scores you have earned so far, even if those scores are from different test dates.
Test Composite English Math Reading Science Writing
Score – – – – – –
Date Taken (mm/yyyy)

Thanks! She’d be in great shape if ACT was superscored LOL!

sujormik - commonapp is allowing superscores but individual schools can require you to submit all scores from all rounds. So you may want to look at rules for each school you are applying to.

Thanks texas…we are focusing on safeties first so the superscoring isn’t REALLY necessary yet. ;-)

The Common App may allow you to select scores, but ACT won’t allow you to selectively send only portions of scores.

[ACT FAQ : Can I send my Writing Test score without sending my multiple-choice scores?](ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test)

Thus if the school requires a test with a writing score, you must send either sitting that had the writing portion or send score from both sittings and hope they’ll superscore. (Some schools do.)

We are talking about $40 dollars here.

ACT also charges per test date.
