Capped loans Confusion!

I have read that Rice's loans are capped at like 10-15k which is awesome but I'm not sure if that means I will actually graduate with less debt than that... My parents are divorced p1 makes 45k a year and p2 who I have had no relationship with for 7 years makes 100k a year. There is no money saved for me, 0 dollars and 0 cents. Does Rice's policy mean that I won't have to find a way to get 100k in debt!!?? Or does the policy mean that the coa-efc will be capped at 10k in loans? (If so, I'm screwed). Does anyone actually know what the policy is here?

Does the second parent (who you have not had contact with/relationship with for 7 years) count towards income?

You can take additional loans above the Rice cap if you need to/want to, as far as I know.

Loan caps refer to capping loans in your FA package. The FA package is based on your need as determined by the school based on parent income. Any expected Parent contribution does not count as part of the aid package and does not come under the loan cap. So if your parent required contribution is $5,000 a year, or $20,000 a year, then that would have to be funded separately from your FA award from your school (whether by the parents or by loans). Does Rice ask for non custodial parent information? If so, that will impact the contribution required from the family.

I think they do ask for non custodial parent info (if I remember correctly), but I noted that I had no relationship with that parent and therefore did not submit info on that parent. So Rice did not factor that parent’s income into my package.

@dragon2owl How did you get around it? When asked about his income, name and educational background, did you just not acknowledge his existence? Can I get in trouble for that??

wavylays - call FA or send them an email and let them know that you have absolutely no contact with the non-custodial parent.

From another thread by the OP they state that P2 has been paying child support faithfully. Can’t claim no contact in that case. Non-custodial info must be included.

Not reporting it is fraud.
