My D was planning to attend another Texas school which will cost about 11K out of pocket (loans). She just got accepted to Rice and wonders if it could work. We did not submit the financial aid to Rice because we didn't think she would get in. I called Rice today and they said its not too late and families with income under $80k don't have loans. Is this true? Our income is in the $50's and our EFC was 5K. How does financial aid actually work. We have few assets and owe more on our house than it is presently worth. I don't want her to get her hopes up if it will be out of reach. I also don't want her to have $45K in debt from a less rigorous school that wasn't a great fit. Any ideas what a Rice package involves work study, but what about loans?

I believe Rice has NO Loan policy if less than 80k income. I think they will come close to meeting your EFC with only work study award for student. I think they are very generous.

Yes, Rice does not give out loans to those under 80k. Send in your financial info as soon as possible! Good Luck!

Just one small clarification- Rice doesn’t include loans as part of the FA package for families with under 89k, but loans are available if requested. My son has small Perkins loans from each of his two years at Rice.

The MAX loan value over 4 years at Rice is $10K. Submit the necessary docs as they are INDEED generous. In DD’s case, zero out of pocket.
