Car/automobile design career and colleges

Hello :)

I have a sophomore friend who is interested in following car design as a career choice. However, (even though he has two years before graduation) he wants to know what is the exact name of the major or bachelors degree for his career choice. We were researching in the net and we think it might be: Industrial Design or Transportation Design. And if there are any colleges, universities, institutes for this career choice ONLY in Texas. I am still researching in the web but I would like to any opinion out there or if anyone in this forum had important information about this career. Any answer will be really helpful :)

Thank you very much in advance,
I really appreciate it!

Automotive engineering is an option, but that’s usually a masters level degree.

In general car design can be found as either a major or a concentration… I don’t think there is just one name for it because programs differ in their approach and goals.

College board matchmaker says U Houston and Texas A&M University-Commerce have Industrial Design but neither seem to have transportation design as a concentration or anything… Texas Tech U seems to have Mech Engineering but that’s not quite the design of the car body. Hope that helps if you haven’t gotten that far yet. Just be sure to check all the details of the concentration/minor/major on each site. Look at art/design schools, etc. :)

Lawrence Technological University, College for Creative Studies (Detroit).

Car design is a sub-set of industrial design, sort of like a particular specialization within it. As far as schools go–just look at any art school that offers industrial design.

Art Center, to my knowledge is one of the few if not the only school that offers a car design major.

The major is called transportation design at art center. He should take a lot of art classes while in high school so he can get a portfolio ready for admissions should he decide to go the art school route.
