Car Insurance

Here's a general question:
What happens with car insurance once we go to college? I mean, I'm only going to be driving my car at home a few months a year and I don't want to pay that $130 a month even when I'm not driving it. Is there like a special rebate or something?

Check with your company. Mine (USAA) changes rates for college students who are attending college far from home. And I think "far" is more than 100 miles. There may even be more if you truly put it in storage. If you don't put it in storage, somebody should drive it every now and then.

My daughter is going to college in Illinois, six hours from here. Because she is going to school over 150 miles away, State Farm lets us suspend the insurance on her car while she is gone. We take it off in August, then start it up again in mid-May.

bring your car with.

I heard parking is scarce and it is advisable not to bring a car freshman year. Is this true?

Yeah, I hear that there's not much need for a car at all at UM. Thanks Peggy. I thought that the insurance companies would do everything to earn more money.

The parking situation is not as bad as everyone says it is. All you have to get is an "orange parking pass"... it's only $50 for a semester. there are about 10 orange lots throughout campus that you can park your car at 24 hrs a day. Most are in north campus or over by the stadium so you might have to take the bus to get your car. Basically, I just leave my car parked there all the time and if I need to go somewhere I cant walk to, i go get it.

Is there any need for having a car?

eehh...you don't need a car 1st year....maybe as time progresses. I def. wouldn't start with one though.

Also, is there any point of having a bike? Or do buses and walking suffice?

Bike isn't a bad idea...lots of people use them.

There's really no need for a car. If you have one, you'll also have parking tickets. The bus system in Ann Arbor can get you just about everywhere. Most freshmen don't have cars.
