Car On Campus

I'm planning on bringing my car next semester so I can use it during the weekend or whenever necessary. The problem is I've heard a lot of stories about cars being broken into, dented, scratched and sometimes stolen. My car is not even over 2 yrs old, doesn't have 5,000 miles on it and it was relatively expensive so I'm definitely wary about bringing it to school if it might get damaged. My parents are offering to give me one of our older cars so I won't have to worry about my car being injured, however, the old car is 12 years old, has a lot of mileage and has had several engine and brake problems before. The parking spaces on campus seem pretty capacious but who knows what might happen with some of the students rushing to get a space before class! I'm just afraid to bring my car on campus if I'm going to risk injuring it but I also don't want to bring the old car since I'm not accustomed to driving it and I don't know if it's going to give me problems later. So should I just stick with bringing my car or take the old one? And if you've brought your car on campus can you tell me if you've had any problems with having your car on campus.

If you don’t mind me asking the make and model of car

It’s a 2010 Mercedes GLK 350 it’s a bit custom made so I got it a yr before it actually come on market… I know I’m a spoiled brat.

Holy ****ing disney channel.

Take the old one. It’s an no brainer

Also, what school are you going to? Some schools are safer than others for cars. Also, as a freshman living on campus, you don’t particularly need one if it’s in a cool area.

Does your school issue parking permits to freshmen? Mine doesn’t, so I won’t be bringing a car.

Nice car BTW. How did you get it before it went on sale?

You won’t use the car too much, like you said. Bring the old one.

i have a 2010 e92 m3 and its been fine. My parents taught me to do everything i can to keep it in perfect condition, but sometimes they’re things you just can’t control. It’s a car. Things will happen to it, but you just have to do YOUR best.

I’ve haven’t had any scratches, dents, ect. I keep mine in the parking structure, usually 2nd or 3rd level…the first tends to be where everyone is in a rush and wants to find the closest spot they can.

Heavily advised that you take the old car before you have no real friends due to jealously. (half-serious)

Take the old car. Love a piece of crap before you can appreciate an amazing car like that. Honestly it would be better if they made you buy your own piece of crap, unless you somehow earned the first one.

Bring the old car.
At one campus we had an open parking lot and no security. I remember some moron reversed his car straight out and hit my car and sped off. He had such a small car and there was no reason for him to jet out of his parking spot the way he did.
Some people are just idiots and are reckless so better take the old car. Luckily there was no dent on my car, but what a moron. I was also standing right next to my car when he did it.

@PrincessMAHiNA, my campus is pretty safe, unfortunately the college is mainly a commuter school so the campus can get pretty dead on the weekends so it’s nice to have a car to go to the local clubs, beach & concerts near by since we don’t have a strong transportation system.

Mercedes usually advertise their new cars before they actually put them on the market for the public so you can special order & receive it before it comes out.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely keep that under consideration for whichever car I bring.

I honestly don’t believe I deserve it but anytime I see my car I greatly appreciate what my parents have done for me. I never asked to get a car at all so I’ll definitely keep and uphold it for as long as possible.

Don’t worry. I have an Audi S5 Cabriolet at INDIANA UNIVERSITY and it has never been damaged or vandalized by another student. It has been broken into though (well… not exactly since I forgot to lock the doors and my car was only 1 of a whole parking lot full of cars broken into). If I transfer to NYU, I will definitely not take it with me though and my parents plan to sell it since I’ll be actually moving to Manhattan for at least 9 years (working as a real estate agent). The money will help go into a 2k/month Upper West Side apartment. :D

I’m going to miss my baby though. One more big road trip with the top down this summer and to a new buyer it goes.

LOOl at your car. good for you. i wouldn’t bring it though

Being away at school with the older somewhat sounding undependable car concerns me.

My S has his car (Mustang GT) at school and hasn’t had any issues. That’s what insurance is for. Why have it if you aren’t going to drive it?!

Nice car. We thought S had a nice car UNTIL he got there. Lots of brand new REALLY nice cars. His pales in comparison. There will be others besides yours. Will you be able to park in a garage, or a commuter type gravel lot? That would make the difference for me.

If you can afford a GLK, you can probably afford to fix up that old car a little bit and make sure its all good to drive. I drive a 08 c300 at a private school and nothing has happened to it, but school is filled with rich kids so my car is def not the best.

I went to UNCFSU ( Fayetteville State University), and for the last 2 years I attended 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 ( In the process of trying to get back in) I had a 1991 Chevrolet Corsica, so a pretty old car. Everybody else had either vehicles that were just as old, better, or way better than mine. No breakins, but because i stupidly left my doors unlocked, I’ve had books and phone stolen before. I have a newer car ( 2010) but i feel that my car would be safe…
