how helpful are they in getting a job? there is an engineering one this tuesday but i have work.
i could get the day off and go to the fair, is it worth it?
i would be trying to get a summer job.
is it too early to be looking for a summer job?

No, go to infosessions, apply on corporate websites, through Bruinview. It's actually too late for refineries, although I know for sure Abbot, Baxter, etc are hiring around now.

Aren't you a first year though? Very few companies that I know of (BP, Conoco, Chevron, Exxon) hire first years second years. Most companies (Anheuser, Behr, Hershey, Aera, Technip, Chlorox, City of LA, Dupont, etc) want third years (one summer left) for interns. Some (Frito-Lay) don't even take interns.

If you do research, or want a research internship, UCLA has URC CARE, and some other programs (GOOGLE: UCLA SPUR program). I did research in a chemistry lab during fall, now I'm getting recc. letters and hopefully a position at either IBM Alamaden (where my researchers and prof have worked) or CNSI (NanoCER, research prof is a member)

The apps are due soon though, so get it done early.

My background: Bioengineering 2nd year (Junior) with research interests in nano-stuff and building nanostuff that works with big stuff.
