Hi,

I'm currently a high school sophomore at a very prestigious prep school on the east coast. I'm an accomplished jazz pianist, and I have a passion for music. My resume is pretty good. I have approximately a 3.9 gpa. I'm an AP scholar; I hope to take about 8-10 AP's by the time i graduate.

Perhaps my decision is a bit premature, but I'd love to pursue a career in the music business. I don't necessarily want to be a professional jazz pianist or performer. I'd be happy doing a wide array of things: producing, A&R, owning a record label, etc. My tastes aren't limited to jazz, and I have experience with many styles.

My question is: what should i do for college? I'd like to immerse myself in the world of music. I know that concept is a bit broad, but what would be the best way to pursue a career in the music business? Should I major in business with a music minor? major in music? study at a conservatory?

(just and idea) One of the fastest growing professions in the music industry is intellectual property law. Law school (with a minor in music theory).

You need to do some research, kid! Go on the websites of all the music schools. You don't sound like you want a Conservatory if you are not 100% plugged into performing. With your range of interests, you need to look into some places like Berklee College of Music or NYU where you could dabble in all aspects of the industry. There is a thread here on colleges for music major. Once you start looking at what programs are out there you might begin to see what it is you are really interested in.

joe, there are many options including the administrative/financial/personnel aspects of symphonies, operas and ballets. There are specific offshoots of non profit work including development and fundraising. The area of law has been mentioned. Additional thoughts are performing arts management, public relations, promotion. There are the academic disciplines of music theory, history and the developing area of music therapy.
