Hello,
When you graduate from the academy, is there a limited number of people that can go in to Aviation? If there is, how do they pick? Is it based on class rank? Does anyone know any details on this?

Tyler:
If you go into the catalog, it will list the number of midshipmen who were assigned to each area of service.

In the fall of your senior (firstie) year, the midshipmen indicate their selection
choice(s).

On service selection day (or night?) each midshipman finds out to which selection they have been assigned.

Assignments are based on medical qualifications and a ranking system which I believe includes academic GPA, conduct scores, leadership scores, and military tactics scores. The person with the highest ranking gets his/her first choice etc, until all billets are filled. I believe that this year almost all midshipmen were assigned their first choice.

If I have any of this incorrect, I would appreciate a correction. This information was given to me by a firstie parent.

Hello,
Thank you for the information. Is there any place to find out how many bilets there are for each selection?
Tyler

Tyler:
The information you seek is listed in the catalog.

My catalog is from last year; the information listed is for the class of 2002 (979 members) (found on page 151 of the catalog)

Aviation: pilot training 233 men and 24 women
Naval flight officer training 77 men and 11 women.

As needs of the Navy change, the number of billets in each selection area change.

Happy to help.

Most of your information is correct, however:
1) Not all of the firsties got their 1st choice selection, in fact only 68% did compared to 93% last year. I believe that 48 1/C did not even get billets (because billets had not opened due to an earlier service selection night than previous years).

2) Your information on the ranking system is correct; a lot of consideration is on grades and military performance which makes up the order of merit. However, for certain selections, like special warfare (SEALs), a mini-buds screener and mini-buds performance (summer training assignment) is considered, along with an interview. Sometimes the service selection boards do not just go by order of merit, so it is important to show an interest in the 1st choice service selection because that can help you in showing your motivation to join that community, which is usually important. However, if you strive to be your best at the Academy, everything should fall into place!

Thanks Jadler:
My info was third-hand from a firstie parent, and some of the details were lost in passing the information from one to another. Thanks for the clarification. Do you know how many firsties (05) there are?
