I'm a Sophomore in college, and was just an English major but decided to pick up Business as a second major to strengthen my career choices. Is marketing a realistic goal with this double major? What career opportunities am I affording myself with this? Do this degrees even realistically mesh when look for jobs after graduation?

Have you thought about Law School? If money is not an objective, that isn’t a bad foundation for Corporate Law.

Like wright said, corporate or tax law would be a good mix of the two disciplines if you’re actually interested in both. If you are picking up a business major strictly to become a more “marketable” candidate, then I’m not quite sure what career path would be best suited for you. In the latter scenario, you are probably going to have to choose between a career in business or english (whatever that might be).

I’m not a recruiter so I don’t know for sure, but does anyone think that recruiters would be impressed by the addition of an English major to a business degree? Not that it would lead to a specific job, but it seems like it would be a plus for certain business jobs.

If English is already your mother tongue, why would they be impressed? Better yet, be fluent in a second language which sets you apart.

Because there are students who graduate with with a strong GPA from strong undergrad business programs with terrible writing and communication skills. If you have an English degree, they know you are not one of them.

But you don’t have to have an English degree to be able to write well. Most employers ask for a writing sample as a condition for employment anyways.

Double major in English and Business > Business major > English Major

So by all means supplement your English major with a business major.

Mitt got a B.A in English before going and getting his MBA/JD

^^^ Well when your dad is is a Presidential cabinet member, you don’t have to worry about getting into the Harvard JD/MBA program.

That helps but its not like that was the only reason he got in haha.

kids with ‘soft’ business majors such as marketing, etc are having trouble getting jobs. people with finance + accounting combo tend to do fine.

that said, english major is completely useless unless you plan to become a teacher

I’m in the same boat although I am not worried about landing a job because I’m taking on Supply Chain Management and English. For you, Marketing and English is fine although a lot of people tend to see Marketing as more of a “soft” major. Combine that with English and it doesn’t really provide an “oomph” effect. You might still be able to land a good job but I don’t reckon it will come easy. I would suggest going for a business degree with more appeal like Finance, Economics, Accounting etc. These will easily get you any job and coupled with English helps give you great written or oral communication skills that would put you above the other graduates who simply majored in one business degree. Good luck!
