Career Path

I am a junior in high school working to be a future Family Physician. What classes do I need to take in college to go in the right direction? For example, do I go into Biomedical Engineering; Pre-Med? I want to go to The University of Oklahoma and that is what they offer. Do I take that?

You can really major in anything and go on to medical school. You’ll just need to take sufficient science and math courses to do well on the MCAT test. Oklahoma or any other school you attend will very likely have pre-med advising to help you determine the classes you need to take to prepare yourself for the MCAT. To emphasize, though, you can major in bio, chem, biomedical engineering, physics, math, anthropology, econ, or most anything else. The important thing is to do well in your classes and take the classes that prepare you for the MCAT. Also, med schools now want to see applicants have a lot of hands-on experience. They look for many, many hours of service work, including some in medical-related fields. One of the best things you could do to prepare yourself for med school is to get EMT certified and volunteer while in college. You can probably take the course necessary for certification in college, or even perhaps at a community college or other location before you go off to college. There are certainly other things you can do as well. This is just one recommendation. You can search the University of Oklahoma site for pre-med advising. You might even find a list of recommended courses or a recommended schedule for pre-med students. Good luck!

Program Description
Second paragraph reads in part “Students may major in any academic area as OU undergraduates, as long as they take the pre-requisite pre-Med courses…
If anything you may want to consider an academic area that interests you as if you like material you’ll tend to do better. In addition you may want to consider a major which can serve as a Plan B should you change your mind about medicine. Engineering tends to be a difficult major to maintain a competitive med school GPAs.

Although premed reqs can vary from school to school, use link below to OK’s med school’s premed reqs as a starting point to see what you may be facing. Many students will choose Bio as a major, perhaps out of interest, but also because of course overlap (you satisfy both premed.major reqs at same time) where if you’re say a history major, you have to find way to schedule in premed reqs.

The most important thing you can do now is continue to strengthen your academics and enjoy remaining time in hs. Good luck.
