career services

I have applied to Rice ED and am working on the applications for other schools. The last 2 visits ive been on for other schools(especially claremont mckenna) have really emphasized their career services departments and have been pretty clear that they have a pre-professional focus. My time at rice was kind of the opposite. I just wanted to know how has helped alumni with jobs or how current students feel. Anything with job placements or grad school help would be appreciated. Ill be majoring in sports management of economics if i get in but any insight would work. thanks

Career services isn’t something I would pinpoint as one of Rice’s main strengths, but I know that program is something academic advising is really focusing on improving in the coming years. However, for both of your fields I think our placement is pretty strong. There’s an overwhelming number of consulting companies that come every career fair for econ (so much that other non-science/engineering majors complain about it) and sports management can hook you up with a job with the rockets super easily (hell, my math major friend has been doing analysis for them since sophomore year).

I’ll be very honest - Rice Career services is terrible. I hear a lot about A&M, UT, Ok State etc. from our HR department but not much from Rice. We set up a stall there, but the career fair is quite small and mediocre. It is heavily geared towards Oil and Gas and consulting.

Sports Management on the other hand has more career opportunities through the department itself.

It isn’t hard to get a job (your Rice degree helps a lot) but it takes some work on your own.

Rice is Rice. The name speaks for itself, and is probably more helpful than anything a good career services office can do.
