Carleton class of 2011!

Plethora--My #1 daughter looked at Kenyon, loved it, but found the overall feel just a bit pretensious for her tastes. My younger daughter (a high school senior) refused to look at Kenyon or Grinnell because she thought they were too remotely located. She visited Carleton and fell in love. She's applied RD there. Interesting what you said about Wesleyen, because that had been one of her choices as well, though we never visited.

FB--

Well, I'm currently residing in Missouri and, although I'm a native upstate New Yorker, a few warm winters have softened me up. And to be truthful, even though we got a lot of snow in NY (lake effect for the win!), I don't remember it getting below zero more than a few times... So I'm a bit intimidated. But I miss the snow and skiing and such! So that will be super-fun!

Are you the Graham also on facebook?

I haven't spent a lot of time in the northeast, but from what I've been told Minnesota winters are colder than those in the northeast, and we are supposed to get less snow as well. Due to a lack of snow and a really efficient snowplow system I haven't had a snow day since sixth grade! We have had one or two big snows this winter though...
Yes, I am the Graham from facebook as well.

I am so hoping my son gets accepted. Congratulations to all of you!! He applied to Grinnell also and Macalester and Oberlin among others. We looked at Wesleyan and it was on his list until he saw Oberlin. He thought they were comparable but Oberlin felt friendlier. I do know kids at Wes though, both now and recent and not-recent grads and they all love/d it and are totally unpretentious. But I know what you mean about Carleton; the warm, friendly, playful vibe was very strong.

I know a great guy who went to Wesleyan, I actually think it's a pretty good place, I just detected a slight, slight bit of "We're highly ranked and we know it." I visited Oberlin and I thought it was a nice place though I didn't end up applying. My 10th grade English teacher, my favorite teacher ever went to Oberlin and liked it quite a bit. One of my closest friends is anxiously awaiting a letter from Macalester. I hope your son comes to Carleton, but it looks like he's set up a really great list and he'll probably have a blast wherever he ends up.

hey Leshachikha
I am from Nepal and I got deffered from carleton too.

Can you write down your stats(like SAT 1&2, CLEP, ECs)
It would be helpful to me

I second nepali69 s request, could you post your stats. And nepali69 as well.could you kindly post or mail your stats.Ps im also in nepal right now but am not nepali.Ahhhh the world is so small.

i am also applying to carleton as a rd candidate...and i too am a nepali...i know two more people who got deferred from carleton in edii. seems like everyone from nepal is deferred.

^^
all the intels are here I see,
time to count me in too.
(I'm Indian and RD btw)

wait whats an intel im lost. (cant find confused smiley thing but insert here)

intel = int'l = International student/applicant.

nepali 69 & fsa1:

I'm so sorry you got deferred, nepali! :(

Since I'm a domestic, I'm not sure my stats will be especially helpful, given that admissions standards are different for international students. But anyways... My SAT scores are definitely NOT through the roof, but they were high enough for National Merit Finalist. There's the usual garden-variety of APs, plus 4 years of every core subject (science, math, english, foreign language, and social science) at the highest level I can. Extracurriculars... I'm editor-in-chief of the school literary magazine, non-tech coordinator of the robotics team, and on the executive board of our chapter of National Art Honors society, plus a few other clubs/honors societies. I've got a slew of debate stuff at the state level, plus national and state awards for political cartooning. I don't have any sports (coordination is definitely not one of my defining characteristics, lol!), but I've got a fair amount of volunteer work, plus I play several instruments (a few types of recorder, modern flute, traverso, tin whistle, fife, piano, etc).

For anyone applying next year:
Methinks the main thing to remember, though, is that the unquantifiable things like the essays are very important for a place like Carleton. Great stats only get you so far and middling-to-poor stats only hamper you so much. I spent a lot of time researching the school and getting to know its culture and traditions (falling in love with it all the while!). I engineered my essays to showcase that I knew what Carleton was about and that that community was right for me. "Fit" is important for the applicant, but in a small liberal arts college, it's just as important for the school itself. So it really helps for that "Why Carleton?" essay to be memorable, sincere, and well-researched.

Anyways, good luck to all those RDers still waiting for replies!

hello everyone... I received my offer last Dec. I am an international student from China. I am so eager to meet you guys this Sept.! Pls. say gd luck to my VISA application, coz it's a bit problematic for Chinese students who wish to study in USA. HA HA :) Thank you very much!

By the way, currently i am learning russian and i intend to take russian course in Carl. Anybody here who can speak russian or intend to study russian?

are the RD decisions out ? if not, when will they be

A mother of a student admitted last year said we might hear this week. Hope so!

did she talk to an admin?

I got my good news on March 23 of last year. I think I was among the first to receive an RD letter, since I live only a few hours away from Carleton. If my experience is any indication, you 2011-ers may not have too long to wait.

anyone heard anythin

My junior D is working on campus during Spring Break this week and just had lunch with a friend who works in admissions. Here's her scoop from their conversation:

[quote]
They've been stuffing the admit packets all week, so stuff will be going out tomorrow, I'm guessing. Apparently a very large waitlist, but I didn't get any numbers. Also thought this was cool--a couple kids that were admitted came this week for tours (not knowing they had been admitted), and the dean of admissions handed them their admit packets in person. Pretty cool. Apparently one of those kids was sitting near us at Hogan Brothers. Personal admittance delivery and Hogan Bros--that would pretty much seal the deal for me.

Good luck everyone.

Good luck from the fireflies (mother and daughter)!
