Carleton College Class of 2012

Hey guys, we should all be hearing within the next few weeks so I decided to start a thread.

Good luck you all of you! Post decisions when you get them!

sweeeeeeeet.

Does anyone know when exactly the notification date is?

Carleton generally mails out around the 25th, maybe a bit earlier.

My son (class of 2011) received his notification on Mar. 23rd. (Sick, I know, that I remember the date . . .)

We just received our 3rd tuition increase for our daughter at Carleton. Over$48,000!!!!!! Financial aid hasn't increased. They know she can't leave at this point. It's a good education but $48,000.00???? This is ridiculous. Think twice before being excited about an acceptance there.

ProudMary, I assume you have talked to the financial aid office about the increase in cost without a subsequent increase in your financial aid? I don't doubt your situation, but unless your income has raised in the past year, I do know that it is an unusual one. I did not hear complaints from fellow students at Carleton about raises in tuition that were dramatically different from the raise in their financial aid. And frankly, Carleton's tuition is not going up at a faster rate than most private colleges, and is not going up at a faster rate than it has been for years. I think it is fair for you to provide your experience for a warning, but I would caution you not to assume that it is a common problem (at Carleton or elsewhere).

I can only wonder at those not maddened by the huge increases in Carleton tuition. I don't debate that the education is top rate and respected. I do find it odd that there is such complacency and acceptance. Carleton tuition IS going up at a much faster rate than most private colleges. Faster by far than the rate of inflation.

actually, tuition is not going up faster than other private colleges similar to C, and it there is a very consistent rate of increase. look at the data from the last 8 or so years. and yes, all tuition is going up faster than inflation, its a huge problem. just like gas prices, food prices, and just about all other prices. also, the inflation rate itself is going up.

oh yes there is a very consistent rate of increase. $14,000.00 in 4 years to be exact. Grinnell, Northwestern, oberlin don't show this huge a leap. I find an incredible sense of laissez faire going on here. i can only conclude that this site is visited by those to whom money is not an issue.

Really? That's the "only" thing you could conclude? Couldn't you also conclude that this site might be visited by people who have consulted data on more than one institution before making purely anecdotal claims about that institution? By people who, although they may be in need of financial assistance, but have had dramatically different experiences with financial aid at Carleton than you have (me, for example)? Why does your anecdotal account of Carleton's financial aid and costs trump my own?

March 23 was a friday last year, so maybe we'll be getting them friday this year? (the 21st) ... maybe?

I have to correct myself; my son didn't receive his acceptance on the 23rd last year, he got it on the 26th, the Monday afterward. IIRC, it was mailed on Friday the 23rd. Here's last year's thread:

This board helped me bind my anxiety--and you can figure out when your envelope is likely to arrive by others' posts. The Minnesotans are the canaries in a coal mine, being the first to receive theirs.;)

I live in MN, got my decision (accepted!) in the mail today.

nothing in the mail today here in washington.

i am sooooo nervous. i am starting to have a lot of doubts, hahaha. when i applied, i was thinking i would get accepted, but now i think i am going to get rejected.

ace, do you remember when you applied?

ace,
did your acceptance include any financial aid numbers?

Will we be notified by email or do we have to wait for the package in the mail??I live in Bangladesh, itl take forever to get here.

Yeah I know. I hope they're kind enough to send emails to us.

Ahhhhh!! i think im going to go crazy with all the anticipation!! Im so tempted to call them.Do u guys think that'l be a bad idea?

i doubt they will tell you if you call. they don't want 5000 applicants calling, haha.
