Carleton RD 2022

Okay, I can’t find that specific statement yet, but here is the link (I hope that’s okay to post) to their website discussing guidelines for requesting a change. They also have a form that you have to fill out that lists different things that they will take into consideration.

@Anxiousdad53 is correct in that the FA office doesn’t consider other schools’ offers when considering your FA appeal. The link he provided gives the kinds of things they will consider. In my experience, and as others have said, the FA office is super-knowledgeable and kind. Reach out if you have questions.

@takacatboy , I think you are correct that some schools might be swayed by offers at peer schools, but Carleton isn’t one of them. My ds2 received more money from his top-choice university after I showed them the FA offers from two peer schools, but that doesn’t mean all schools will reconsider.

The days – April 12-13 and 19-20 – are correct. If you can’t get a room in Northfield – we couldn’t when we moved ds1 in – try one of the towns between Northfield and the Cities. Still really convenient and a chance to get away if needed. We stayed in Burnsville, which is 30 minutes north and right off I-35. Lots of shopping (not just the one Target!) and restaurants in the area. We loved The Roasted Pear.

I’m excited for all of you who were admitted. I hope you can visit the campus if you haven’t already. That sealed the deal for us. Oh, and we couldn’t make it work to go during the regular admitted students day so don’t let that deter you. Just go when you can, if you can. There are several of us whose Carls have graduated and moved on but still check in regularly. Feel free to ask questions!

@honestlywhatever ,
Congrats for your acceptance!! Could you please post some detailed stats? It would really be a great help

Hi all! I emailed admissions today, and the dates people are talking about are apparently incorrect. The correct admitted student days are April 12-13, and the other one is April 26-27. The admissions officer informed me that we’ll receive more info on admitted student days in the physical packet.

I went to the Carleton calendar, which shows April 12-13 and April 19-20.

https://apps.carleton.edu/calendar/?start_date=2018-04-19&no_search=1

I remember ds1 getting information in an email.

@“Youdon’tsay” Ah. I have no idea then. I’m just relaying what the admissions officer told me. She certainly could have been wrong though.

Here is a link to the Accepted Student Days. There is a tentative schedule on the page also. https://apps.carleton.edu/admissions/visit/accepted_student_days/

^^^In regard to that link… if you go further and go to register below, the next page has “Accepted Student Days for the class of 2021” ???

@takacatboy , I didn’t notice that, but if you click on the date link that you want and look at the line right under the big Accepted Student Days heading it has the 2018 dates.

@pcmom1 Ah thank you. I guess I’m just a bit of a skeptic  —and believe me… this is me everywhere in life. I’m still deciding whether I want to spend the money to fly out though—especially after being admitted to Swarthmore too.

Hi-
My child is a junior and just visited Carleton. We both loved it! It’s definitely a reach school. I would love to hear what other students’ stats are who were accepted/rejected.

Did anyone get a welcome email from Carleton after being accepted yet? I just want to make sure not getting one is normal…

@plumpillows I have no received one either. I’m assuming they’re trying to let people receive their letters in the mail prior to sending a welcome email.

@takacatboy Thats a relief. Thank you!

My daughter got her official acceptance package in the mail today. We can’t wait to go visit in April!!!

Does anyone happen to know anything about the Honorary William Carleton Scholars program? I was designated one in the acceptance letter, but it provides almost no information and Google isn’t showing anything either.

@uncreativename I am fairly sure it really is just honorary with no benefits or anything additional. It’s a recognition of your performance in high school. My eldest was designated one as well a couple of years ago, and I don’t believe you get anything for it.

My daughter got waitlisted with a 1520 (790 math 730 reading), 5.2 weighted gpa (3.95 uw) at arguably the hardest and most challenging HS in the country, 4APs, stellar references, and enough ECs that she shouldn’t have had any issues getting in. Her school is a 2 year boarding school for STEM, and it’s basically college 2 years early. She’s gotten one B there in 2 years, and I know that Carleton is aware of how challenging it is there, what with leaving home at 16 and all. They even sent an admissions counselor to NC to visit her school and interview students. She also interviewed with an alum, and we flew to Northfield to visit. So, it was well known that she was interested. I still can’t believe it, and neither can she, it was in her top 2. She might still get in, but if she does I’m sure any financial aid will be dried up by then, and that’s pretty much the only way she would’ve been able to go due to finances being what they are. So disappointing, but she does have UNC to fall back on, so there’s that.

@ShredderRob That is surprising but schools like Carleton see a lot of very qualified kids. And where you thought it was maybe special that they came to your school, Carleton sends its reps to many high schools. Our very intense suburban high school also has Carleton come through in the fall, meet with interested kids, and set up interviews. Our guidance counselor told us that interviews are the absolute key for Carleton and we’ve seen kids from our school with (a little) lower stats have terrific interviews and get in. So, one, students applying to these schools with such low acceptance rates should never let themselves feel like that are getting in until those decisions are out. Even with high stats and demonstrated interest, nothing is a slam dunk. And, two, maybe the Carleton rep just wasn’t sure if your D was the right fit for the school. Our GC said they look for kids that fit. Now, I’m not exactly sure what makes a student fit there, but those AOs know. And third, is Carleton need blind? I’m not sure. If they are not, it might be possible that they just needed more full pay kids. I think they have something like 50 percent full pay students.

UNC is a dream school for so many kids at our high school but being OOS makes it a rough acceptance. If your daughter goes there, she’ll be in great company!

@ShredderRob – I agree with homerdog on all points. Your student is of course qualified to do well at Carleton and any other top college, and I’m sorry she was not admitted. I feel like we have to tell our kids to fall in love with lots of colleges b/c it is indeed so random which one they get into. My D. has tried to take that approach – apply lots of places and keep an open mind.

My D was waitlisted at Barnard which on paper and stats seemed like a great match. But to Homerdog’s point, as I thought further I can see how my D’s essay would not convey that she’d be a good fit for Barnard’s urban, edgy campus and student body.

My D had long, good conversation with Carleton admissions rep who visited her school as well and that may have made a difference.

Finally, Go Heels!
