CMU is the only school I know of that will give you an answer on all of that before you apply. All you need to do is fill out their “Financial Aid Estimator” and they will send you a formal estimate of what you can expect to receive if you are admitted: https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/financial-aid-estimator
Don’t be surprised if it isn’t enough. CMU is notorious for gapping students and being stingy with aid. My DD’s formal estimate gave us an EFC nearly $20,000 more than other schools. I called because I thought there must have been a mistake. They assured me that there wasn’t a mistake, but they knew I could get a home equity loan that would cover the difference. Not long after that conversation I received a glossy brochure from the school giving me all sorts of info on loans and why a CMU education was worth it. I showed it to DD and we agreed she wouldn’t even bother applying there.
My DS is a freshman there now. Keep in mind that CMU does not guarantee full need. While the cost estimator may give you a general idea, their financial aid packages are not consistent from one student to the next. For the students they want most they will offer additional funds, both in need packages and merit. How they select those “desirable” students I do not know – they are using their own particular criteria. My son received a very generous package from CMU, rendering that school his cheapest option (including his in-state Public). But he did not have the highest scores, a national award, or a famous family. What he did demonstrate is a long standing passion for his area of interest, and a history of academic risk taking.
