Hello! I'm thinking about applying to CMU for Theatre. Being as it costs $115 plus all the stress of auditioning, I want to make sure I have a fighting chance. Here are some academic stats:
- 3.9/4.0 unweighted GPA, all AH or AP classes where I could with the exception of opting for AH Gov over AP Gov.
-2030 SAT (600 math, 700 writing, 730 verbal. That was from my first time my jr year though.. I took it again in November and will get my scores in November, but I'm pretty sure my math will go up..not a whole lot, I am pretty bad at math, but when I first took it the first time I omitted 6 and missed 7, and I'm sure I did my share of guessing, but this time around I still omitted like 6 but I only guessed once after having limited the choices down.. I think the others were all right..hopefully.)
-plenty of theatrical extracirriculars but also National Honor Society, choir, German club, and a few academic teams.

Other than my low math, I think I have a chance to get accepted into the uni. Plus I'm taking the ACT in December but that'll be for the first time and might not get to them by January 1st..but I'll tell them I'm sending the scores anyway.

But how selective is the theatre program? Can someone give me an idea of what I'm up against?

thanks

CMU auditions 1200 students for their BFA Drama program. They accept approx. 10 for musical theater and 18 for Acting. The odds are long shot and should be thought of as a lottery. They do not accept more to yield that number as many schools do. Rather, they have a priority waitlist they will use if anyone they accept doesn't take the offer. My D was on that priority waitlist but I would call this school very very long shot odds for anyone, including the most talented kids in the country. Your basic academic stats should be OK, if you pull up the math SAT but the bigger issue for you will be the audition, because at CMU, the audition counts 90% of the admissions decision.

Agree with Soozie: you theater ECs and audition will matter far more than test scores, especially math.

Do you really think that extra curriculars count all that much at CMU? I have heard, over and over, that the audition is IT there, even more than it is at schools such as Michigan and NYU, both of which are also academically excellent schools.
I am puzzled as to why extra curricular activities would matter all that much. Could anyone explain? This is the first time I have heard this said.

they'll consider your ECs because those will show them how dedicated you are and how much time and effort you'll put into their program, but other than that your audition is really it.
