Carnegie Mellon SCS vs Johns Hopkins CS

I got accepted to both CMU SCS and Hopkins Computer Science. My dad enrolled me at CMU, was this the right move? I got the same aid package for each.

Carnegie Mellon is definitely better at CS. I don’t really see that much of a difference in the other aspect of the schools. I guess CMU is known for being very techy and JH is known for its…premed? Unless you really, really want better weather or food, CMU is better.

CMU is better. Number 2 ranked CS school and has a pipeline to Google and Microsoft.

If you are 100% sure you only want to do CS and/or something techy, then Carnagie Mellon for the wolf. It’s one of the most renowned places for computer science.

Actually, while JHU isn’t highly ranked in CS, it’s easily better than CMU for natural language processing, and possibly a few other areas of CS that I’m not thinking of.

But SCS is excellent in general, so if your interests are in other areas of CS, then CMU is probably the better option.

JHU is a stronger school than CMU but CS is the strongest major at CMU. If you plan to go for a phD in CS, I would go with CMU because you’ll probably have better research opportunities. JHU does have strong areas in computer surgery and natural language processing though. If you plan to get a job or go to professional school, I would go with JHU because it’s a more well rounded university. It attracts a more diverse range of employers and it will be helpful if you want to look for a job that isn’t in software engineering.

They recruit at both schools. Google probably gets more people from CMU because more people there are looking for a software engineering career.

Thanks everyone
