I've been accepted to these three schools, (CMU in computer science). I've done quite a lot of CS in high school, but I'm interested in other things as well, including econ and statistics, and I also like creative writing. I know that for computer science CMU is definitely the best choice, but what if you are thinking about the overall quality of education. I really like the atmosphere of Uchicago and the core, but the CS department is small and idiosyncratic. Thoughts?

There used to be a poster on here (simplykate?) that was a creative writing major at CMU. She seemed pretty happy with the department. Keep in mind as a CS major you’ll be required to pick up a minor, and there are plenty of other people interested in econ and stats.

It really depends. If your passion is computer science, then Carnegie Mellon is place for you. I find that most of the professors, CS and non-CS, were pretty good, so you can still have a well-rounded education at CMU SCS, if you want to. If you aren’t complete sure of what to do yet and like the common core, then maybe Chicago is better for you.

I would personally not consider Hopkins, since the atmosphere there is hyper-competitive, and I don’t see anything at Hopkins undergrad does that is better than both CMU and UC (except maybe BME).
