Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2019

I do believe that waiting until the very end to complete the application may have hurt some of you. With rolling admissions, they could have accepted almost all of the students for the summer programs, which left very few spots remaining for a very competitive group that applied at the end of the admissions cycle.

Congrats to all accepted. If I may ask what were some of the creditial listed in your application? Gpa psat extra curricular?

@RoleModelMe I was accepted with a 35 ACT. I did not really mention any extracurriculars since there was not a specific place to put them in the application and none of my extracurriculars fit in well with the essays I wrote, but I think my essays really showed my interest in STEM. I am also a part of an underrepresented minority, so that may have helped.

I don’t think this program is very stat driven. I think the goal is to create opportunities for the high potential students who otherwise would have no access to the resources.

That being said, I think @jimjung76 's profile fits this goal very nicely. Don’t know why you didn’t get an acceptance.

My son was accepted with a 35 ACT/~3.8 UW GPA, talked about his YouTube channel and his tech abilities and how his volunteer work has shaped the young man he is today. He spent a few months cleaning up the essays but I gave him a hard deadline (by Jan 31st) because I thought that a backlog of top students would be applying at the 2/15 deadline. Being an African American male didn’t hurt, but the chances of getting accepted were much better back in December when more slots were open and when very few students were sending in applications. I think the test scores/GPA were just a portion of a holistic process. Students with lower test scores and grades who have a great story and good essays get into SAMS every single year. There are more great students than spots and there are always worthy students who are not selected. @RoleModelMe, you are a great student and you will find another opportunity. My son would have started contacting college professors in our area to try and get some research experience if SAMS and MITES did not come through. So keep working and good luck.

Do you guys think it’s worth it to call today? I don’t want to risk that influencing the decision, but I don’t rly see how they could penalize me for it, after all it was them who said within 2 weeks. Thoughts?

I ended up calling the office, didn’t really find out anything helpful, just that “All decisions should be finished by the end of next week.” Hopefully I find out sooner rather than later tho the stress is killing me.

If it was based on underpresented minorities, I should’ve got accepted. Minority with academic excellence, extracurriculars, in urban district. I wasted over a month working on NINE essays to only get rejected. I found out about it a little over a month before deadline, no thanks to guidance, had so much going on at the time. I regret not looking into more summer programs and applying. My guidance counselor sucks. The more I read about lower GPAs and PSATs accepted to more upset… So UNFAIR. Sorry congrats to all. I probably to scratch them off my college application list too. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

For everyone who got rejected and are confused to how… One factor could be how late you turned in your materials since its rolling admissions. Also, the admissions committee said that they were looking for people that would be otherwise perfect but is “missing something” on their application (like students that need a boost). I was accepted with a 1230 psat, NO AP classes, but a 95% gpa if that helps.

They want to help people succeed who they believe has the potential to do so. If you have a 34-36 ACT or 1500+ SAT and perfect ECs, then they have no inclination to help you. It is an inclusion program. If you have perfect stats, that diminishes their mission.

I kinda agree with that. I feel like if I had lower test scores, then I would’ve had a higher chance of getting in. I go to a poor school district with primarily urm students ( I’m one of 4 asian students in the entire district lol). But I self studied my ass off for the ACT and AP tests that my school dont even provide. I included all this in my essay, and was rejected. But I do not feel too bad about it, as the program is mainly targeted for underrepresented minorities. I’ll try to get an internship this summer instead

anyone applied for AI4ALL only and got accepted?

@jimjung76 I wouldn’t say a lower score would have helped. But also, you should know that the way SAMS accepts people isn’t the same way colleges accept people. You are likely to be in a better position to get into a top school than some SAMS students. Just keep doing what you like to do, and yeah, an internship is a great way to go about that.

Anyone hear anything tonight?

And Jim, honestly this program is B.S. for not taking you, considering your background and what you’ve accomplished given your circumstances you deserved that acceptance more than most, certainly more than me that’s for sure. The fact that they couldn’t see that makes me seriously question the validity of their disclaimer “Carnegie Mellon University does not discriminate in admission, employment, or administration of its programs or activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, handicap or disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, creed, ancestry, belief, veteran status, or genetic information.” I know you’ll reach success though bro, even if they can’t see your drive and potential.

Everyone is getting rejected! Are they even accepting anyone??

@adreysahnp I would assume that at this point, they’re narrowing down candidates for the last few spots. That’s at least what I’d like to tell myself since I haven’t been rejected yet :expressionless:

Lol same Max, I just hope that no news is good news.

lmao yeah man, lets hope for the best

First of all, the decisions come out in waves, with no particular order. I guarantee you that there were people who got accepted, waitlisted, and rejected.

If you were accepted, congratulations! You have been accepted into one of the top STEM programs in the nation. I wish you the best of luck during the program and hope that you learn a lot! In addition, please post your stats and any additional information you are willing to include so that future applicants can gauge where they are in terms of the applicant pool.

If you were wait-listed, I know that it was not what you were hoping for. SAMS has been known to take people off the waitlist, so there is still hope. After all the results are out, I would strongly recommend all of you to send a LOCI to them as a sign that you are still interested in SAMS. It can’t hurt!

If you were rejected, they are just missing out on another great STEM student. These rejections are definitely not easy to make for them. They have too many qualified applicants for their very limited spots in the programs. Please don’t take it personally. If you need help with finding other alternatives for the summer, please feel free to PM me or ask here. I would be more than willing to help you out and get you on the right track!
