I’m considering applying for SAMS and I think it’d help me and others as well if we can share suggestions, tips, insider information, etc. on this. 6 weeks is a long time to be away from home, for me it’s three hours away.
Here’s my stats: GPA: 3.96 W, SAT: 1160 (First time, will be taking in March), ACT: 24 (First time, taking again in February)
AP and college level math and science, anticipating a good science recommendation
If anyone would like to share their stats, or if they’ve been accepted (Not sure anyone has at this point) tell what you did… anyone who has been there before and has any reviews or insider tips, all would be appreciated!!!
Also, is this more ethnic minorities that are chosen? I’m not an ethnic minority, but I am an economic minority (1st in family to go to college, rural high school, generally lower income area)
I just submitted all documents required for my SAMS & Pre-College Artificial Intelligence 2018 Application.
My stats: 3.91 UW, PSAT: 1270, taking the hardest math & science classes on campus as a junior (Calc BC, Physics C, Comp Sci A)
I am an immigrant who just came to America for more than a year, also in low socioeconomic background.
Hey! I went to SAMS last year so if you have any questions about it I’d be happy to answer them. As for your concern about ethnic minorities only being accepted that is not the case. There were plenty of people who were the first in their family to go to college and were of a lower socioeconomic background than others. Best of luck!
I’m applying to SAMS, the Pre-College AI program, AP/EA this year and I’m really confused about their application. It says on their website (https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/access-sams-faq) after submitting the online application, "additional materials (transcript, recommendations, essay, etc.) must be mailed in one package and postmarked by the March 15th deadline. " I’m having my teacher write a recommendation for me and submit it online through the application. Do I still have to send it through the mail after I submit the online application? Is there a way for my guidance counselor to submit the transcript through the online application instead of mailing it? What essay are they referring to? I only see two short answers on the application.

@esperantist After you submit the online application, there will be a portal which states what you need to upload as required documents include transcripts, activities resume, essay (there is 1 more 400-word essay out of the 2 short answers). I just submit everything online and I don’t think I have to mail them.
My stats
4.13 out of 4.5 GPA
Extracurricular Activites: Student Council, President of Global Action, NHS, Key Club, Tech Department at my Church, Band
Ethnicity: First Generation Nigerian American
Essay: about being a Nigerian American and a sibling of someone who was diagnosed with autism
Economics: 50,000-65000 dollars a year
However, my PSAT score is a 990
What are my Chances?
I was just curious how did you guys send your transcripts? I already ordered mine from an online site, but I sent it to myself (thought that’s how it’d work). However my transcript document says that it’s prohibited to send anywhere, and it’s only for personal use.
Couldn’t get any help from my guidance counselors, lol. So I probably ordered it wrong. Did you guys send yours in the mail or upload it electronically
Stats- 3.96 GPA, SAT- 1160 (Retaking in March) ACT- 24 (Retaking in February, lol), Anticipating good science teacher rec
Just a thread for any suggestions, tips, inside information… 6 weeks away from home ( I live 3 hours away) so I want to be sure this is worth doing, I’m sure others would benefit from this as well.
Also for those who have attended/ know people who have attended, is it mostly ethnic minorities chosen? I’m not an ethnic minority, however I am an economic minority (low income area, first of family to go to college)
@Youngmis123 I don’t really like chance me’s because you are so much more than just a couple numbers and a short blurb about yourself. But hey, you sound like an individual who is already very successful so just shoot your shot !
I submitted my application to Carnegie Mellon’s Summer Academy of Science and Math in late February, and I submitted the supporting files at varying times between then and March 1. I’ve been impatiently waiting since then. I’ve obsessively visited any site concerning this program, including reading a blog about from 2011. I’ve called the admissions site, and they informed me that they would be sending emails. I’ve resisted the urge to call again. I’ll definitely update everyone when I get my email of acceptance/rejection. My current weighted GPA is a 3.7 and there are a lot of personal factors that contribute to why its so low that I mentioned in my essay. My PSAT score is 1130. I’ll be taking the SAT in June. I am a minority, will be the first in my immediate family to attend college, and I fit the rest of the economic requirements. I’m in 10 clubs including but not limited to, science Olympiad, robotics, quiz bowl, history club, Latin club, student council and I volunteer at my local homeless shelter every Sunday. I really hope the best for everyone applying, please wish me luck.
