Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

@planner03 The accepted students and target size part. And congrats to your S on getting in! I also got in and received the handbook in an email yesterday. What classes does he plan on taking? I was going to go for Calculus and Physics. Also, do you know of the different science and engineering projects they might have?

@planner03 oh ok, I didn’t know that. Do you mind letting me know your son’s stats so that I can have a general idea of who gets accepted?

@ak2018 do you happen to know all of the classes offered?

@ak2018 may i know your stats?

@Sebas514 I actually do as I was given a schedule yesterday with the handbook. You’ll actually be able to choose some of the classes you’d like to be in.

  • Math: Pre-Calculus, Differential/Integral Calculus (Calc 1), or Concepts of Math (Calc 2) Note: (If you pass the class with a B or above, you'll get college credit for it. The math class would be the only class you can get credit for at SAMS)
  • Science: Physics, Chemistry, or Biology Seminar (There may be some more science class choices, but these are the ones I know they will have.)
  • Programming Seminar (Hopefully in Java or another language)
  • Engineering, Computer Science or a Science Project (You get to choose from 15 - 20 different project topics to do and present your project at the end of the summer. I believe there are projects in Rocket Science and Robotics that I'm really interested in.)
  • Standardized Prep Class: I believe they are now prepping for the SAT and ACT. They have gathered data that those who take the prep class raise their SAT score about 50 points on each section. This was pre-New SAT, so that data might no longer be accurate.
  • Personal and Career Development

So yeah that’s what I got. I’ll post the schedule that I got in a minute.

@boahancock 3.44W GPA and a 1220 PSAT. I personally feel like I chosen because my stats showed that I had some potential. I am taking an online college class and was out of the country my freshman year, which partially explains the GPA.

@ak2018 That’s pretty cool! I think I’ll take calc 2 and something biorelated. Hopefully one of the science projects is related to biomed engineering. Do you know if the college credit is similar to something like AP? Also, do you happen to know if we still have to take the SAT course if we are already content with our score? I already got a 1530 and retook it in March, so I doubt that it will help me very much. Sorry for all the questions bro lol

@Sebas514 No, it’s fine. I’ve been asked a lot of questions about SAMS since I’ve got in. I’m personally taking Calc 1 and Physics. I want to hopefully use the Calc 1 credit so that I can be somewhat prepared for Calc BC. The college credit is fairly similar to AP. I read the handbook and it said that we will be given a syllabus on the first day that will describe everything we’ll be learning. There will also be loads of homework/studying as well as tests and quizzes. I would think we will have a final exam. I would think you would still have to take the SAT class, but I’ll email them to see what they say.

@ak2018 Oh ok, I see. Thanks for answering all of my questions. Hopefully I’ll be able to get in and experience sams firsthand

@ak2018 I assume you get the weekends off to study? 8 am classes are going to be very rough though lmao

@Sebas514 We do.

A few additions to what has been stated above based on my S’s past experience and things I have been told recently:

-Test prep won’t be required of students that already have “strong” scores. I was told it might be a study hall or they may come up with an alternative.
-You take a math test upon arrival and are placed in a math course, you don’t choose.
-There are definitely weekend obligations such as meetings, social gatherings, and field trips and they are not optional even if you aren’t interested in participating.
-You do not pick your projects. When S attended they participated in two 3-week projects. They got to rank their top three and for one session they tried to place everyone in one of those choices. For the 2nd project they were randomly assigned one they did not rank. It doesn’t matter if you are interested or not.(S strongly disliked the second placement and it was a miserable experience.)

I don’t mention these things to be negative, I just think students should go into the program with an understanding of what they are getting into.

@planner03 Thanks for the clarification! Do you happen to know how long/difficult the math placement test might be?

did anyone else get accepted ?

@boahancock no email for me yet

Actually, just checked and my name is on the directory?!?!?!?! Any ideas on how to proceed anyone? Still no email

@ChemistryKing7 Me too!!! And I haven’t gotten an email yet either…

But it says summer pre college program on the directory…is that the same as summer programs for diversity?

@jiajia92 Hmmm I know there was always a program separate from the diversity ones but I assume its the diversity program. I wonder when the email will be sent to really confirm…

@jiajia92 The directory doesn’t specify which one you got into. If you applied for a specific program, then you’ll get into that specific program. I’m under Summer Pre-College, even though I got accepted to SAMS.
