Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

@ak2018 okok thanks! When did you receive your email after you saw your name on the directory?

@jiajia92 I was accepted before I even saw the directory. However, some people I know who were on that list received an email later that day.

Anyone else see that their name on the directory and still no email?

congrats you guys!! my name isn’t on the directory unfortunately…may have to look into other things to do this summer :frowning:

@bwscribbles same…

can someone teach me how to use the directory link? is it https://directory.andrew.cmu.edu/ ?
doesnt that link show you the actual students at carnegie mellon?

@boahancock It shows actual student records and students who got into the SAMS/Pre-College programs. You just put in your name to check if you’re in.

I don’t understand this process anymore. My name isn’t on the directory.

@ak2018 it says “no search results”… does this mean i am rejected?

@boahancock It does not. They are still making their decisions, likely until mid-April.

@ak2018 I recall some time ago you posted in the parents thread that you would not be interested in pursuing any programs for minority students because you did not want to be accepted just on the basis that you were URM. What has made you change your mind and now pursue these programs?

@magnetnh I don’t recall saying that about programs, but I do happen to remember my concern with affirmative action in terms of the college. Honestly, I haven’t really thought of me being accepted to SAMS was partially due to me being a minority. Other than checking off the African-American box and writing the essay on how my racial identity has affected my life, my minority status never really came up. I personally feel my accomplishments stood out a lot more. But, in response to how I feel about AA, I will likely be checking the African-American box when I start applying to colleges this fall.

To answer your second question, my mind has been changing quite an awful lot. I think I honestly pursued these programs with the hopes that I would get in, like a lot of others on this thread.

SAMS is a program for URM. People who got accepted don’t have good stats in general, same for MITES. At least MITES is difficult to get in.

@jakeowl There are so many things I find problematic about your post.

First off, don’t assume that URM are less qualified than anyone else. There are people that attend this program with very high GPAs and scores.

Second, MITES stands for Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science. It especially encourages those from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

Third, why are you on this thread if you view this program as inferior? Do you not consider it a waste of your time to be here??

Fourth, stats aren’t the only important thing to these programs. They look for people with great personalities. Maybe you should find one.

@jakeowl I wouldn’t exactly say that’s true. Since starting the Summer Programs for Diversity accepters group chat, I have seen that many of the accepted had stats that were pretty much all over the place. I have seen a person with a 3.97UW GPA and another person with a 1150 SAT score get in. I think part of it was that those applicants likely had some sort of weakness that the admissions counselors thought SAMS might be able to help patch up. I think my weakness was likely my PSAT score of a 1220. I’ve heard, from a Carnegie Mellon article on SAMS back in 2014, that through the SAT Prep course, SAMS students rose their SAT scores 50-60 points, on average for each section. Of course, this was prior to the New SAT, so the scores are likely going to be different this year. I also did see that one person on the MITES thread did say that someone from their school, allegedly, got into MITES last year with a 1500+ PSAT score and also did a lot of science fairs. He was also URM.

@ak2018 Thank you for sharing your perspective and glad to hear that you were accepted.

Ive been accepted to SAMS!! I never received an email, but when I called in, I was told that I was accepted. Feel free to ask me questions.

I tried to call in to confirm but I reached voicemail.

@FreePariah, could you see your name in directory?

@binky66 Yeah, I saw my name in the directory, which is what prompted me to call.

Just try again, and make sure you are calling tel:412.268.2082. That’s the number I called @arinuma
