Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

Just like @FreePariah said I called and found out I was in! Took like 2 minutes! I strongly recommend people do this if they see their name on the directory

@FreePariah, thank you! I called and was told the application is still under review. To those who have been accepted, is there anyone who applied to AP/EA?

First of all, from the SAMS website: “The program seeks to recruit underserved and underrepresented students who hail from a multitude of diverse backgrounds, including ethnic minority students, students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, populations inadequately represented in STEM disciplines and students who reside in underserved school districts and/or are first generation college-bound students.”

  1. I am not sure what your breadth of knowledge is, but mine is first hand,. S attended and I was actually on the campus interacting with the SAMS cohort. Diversity means a lot of things. Not everyone was a URM.
  2. The SAMS mission is "to make good students great." They select students that they feel will benefit from the program, which may include a broad range of stats, but saying that accepted students "don't have good stats in general" is incorrect and insulting. If a super high stats student writes a compelling essay on how they can benefit from the program they can be accepted. Again, first hand knowledge.
  3. MITES students have elite stats and it is one of the most coveted and respected summer programs. Now you are just being ridiculous. BTW, are you aware that a large number of MITES students are Asian?

@hamlon he is on this thread because he has some sort of axe to grind- check the posting history. 12 posts and every one has the same tone.

what is this directory that everyone is talking about? I applied but I have no idea about any directory

@planner03 I just noticed his comment on the quadruplets thread. Wow, what a hater!
@kjake2000 If you type in Carnegie Mellon directory into a google search, the first result will let you search for your name. If it is in there, you have been accepted. If not, that means they have not reviewed your application, you were waitlisted(not sure if they do that), or you were not accepted.

Now I don’t want scare anyone, but I heard that SAMS is, allegedly, accepting 30 new juniors and 30 new sophomores, with 20 automatically-selected returning juniors. They had around 900 applicants, making the acceptance rate around 7%. I heard this from someone who had, allegedly, called the CMaRC office last week to confirm its selectivity.

@planner03 Would you be able to give any validity to this statement? :slight_smile:

@ak2018 that is pretty strange intel since the SAMS application was only open to rising seniors(current juniors)!

I think your source was sharing old info they got off the internet rather than information they actually received from CMU-unless someone working there has been asleep for the past two years that is. SAMS used to be structured exactly like you described, but last year they eliminated the program for sophomores and expanded the program for juniors.

The 118 number that I shared earlier came directly from a phone conversation with a Sr. Admissions Rep.

@planner03 I tried to look back in the thread, but can you restate what you said about the 118 number? Thanks.

Oh just found it. Wow so they went from accepting 70 kids to 118 AND changed it so it’s on a rolling basis? Seems like they’re now trying to get more kids in but removing the competitiveness(sort of?). It seems like they made a mistake by only giving 30 days to respond. To the kids that applied back in January/February, they wouldn’t have heard back from any other programs forcing them to decline…

Do any alumni know if the calc class counts as AB and BC credit or covers the material of both? The course description sounds like AB only, but I was hoping to use the class to skip BC calc.

@User19205234 It is an outreach program so expanding to 118 is supposed to be viewed in the spirit that more students are being offered an opportunity. Rejecting as many students as possible and appearing more selective is not a goal.

I think that rolling admissions helps them put together a class of students that really want to be there. I don’t know if it should be viewed as a mistake. Again, I really don’t think it is their goal to be a back up program for students that get rejected from their preferred choices. If a student doesn’t want to commit after 30 days it is reasonable that another student that really wants to attend is offered the opportunity.

Does anyone know how to enroll for SAMS? I got the email and can access my account, but I don’t know where I pay the deposit

i called today and they told me that they were still “working on my application”, but i submitted really early and idk whats going on anymore :frowning:

@boahancock Me too, but maybe it means you still have a chance. Did you apply to AP/EA or SAMS?

@jmlxfar , i applied for SAMS! Hb u?

@boahancock AP/EA

Has anyone heard from them this week?

@binky66 I got my acceptance email this week

@planner03 Thanks for the clarification. And I also totally agree with your post #831.

Is anyone here previously attended Game Academy? What’s really covered in that program. Any reviews? I have been accepted to Academy. Is it worth it?
